Can anyone tell me how to............

Reinstalling Windows XP must be in there air. I trying to do the same thing now. I feel you pain!:salute:

My new installation of XP is about two thirds the size of the old one even with all of the updates and service pack 3 which I thought I had installed but hadn't.
I think some of the updates from MS caused cumulative problems over the last five years and it is probably well worth dumping the old installation and reinstalling it fresh, even if it is a pain in the nether regions.

Good luck with it all

Sometimes a fresh install of Windows is the lesser of two pains. Been there, done it, I don't remember how many times. Sandar, is your XP disk SP3, also? If not, it might be worth the effort to learn how to slipstream XP with the necessary Security Packs unto a disk together. Saves time.

Some were along the way windows cut out my sound card. Now I'm back take to SP2. Hoping that will fix the card. I F^*&ING HATE THIS!

EDIT
Somthing in the SP3 I downloaded for it droped my Sound card. I Back up SP by restore and it now works....

Is SP3 and is better to have than SP2? I know my PC is old and I don't think my card will work with SP3.

I do not recall any issues with SSP3 and sound cards (which does not mean there are not plenty) but my first suggestion would be to go to the site for your specific Sound card Mfg and get the most up to date XP drivers. If there is any kind of compatibility issue with any version of XP or the Service Packs you will not be the first to have had it and there is a very good chance the Mfg site has an updated driver or other fix. The other thing to try is to grab the driver and save it, then pull the card install SP3, then install the card and do a fresh install of the driver. I had to do that one time back on a Windows 2000 system, we had a Tape drive that would not work after a service pack update. It almost drove me nuts (and that is a short trip) but after everything else failed I pulled the SCSI card installed the SP got it working fine and then installed the drivers for the SCSI card and then the card it self and it worked like a charm.

Weird as that all sounds the order in which you install software and hardware can often make a huge difference in how well it works or if it works at all.

Best of luck with it, Oh and do give "How to Geek" a look they probably have some info there that might be useful. For the link see my first post to this topic.

The most aggravating occasion with SP2 I had was when I reinstalled XPSP2 after a hard drive failure which was rectifyied with a new SATA hard drive. I couldn't complete the install becuz SP2 had no native drivers for SATA controllers. They were added into SP3. Slipstream time so I could finish the install, becuz I had no floppy drive. AAAaarrgh!!

Well I'm happy with SP2 so far. I can't do alot with it since it has no AV. (The lack of a AV and a Ass of a house sitter that was told that the AV was not work and I could not fix it while I was on vacation crashed the Op sys in Aug.)

I was wondering if somthing has gone wrong as windows XP with SP2 and a few thing is 16.06GB on the HD. Is the about what it should be?

No more, I give up after this!:isadizzy:

Allen, my xpsp3 is 4GBs.

That all that on your HD?!? My 16.06GB from the C: drive....

Have you ran all the update you can from MS. I have a just about evay update I can from MS.

Allen, I updated Windows and only got 6 Security updates and 1 Hardware. For all practical purposes, my Windows XP folder is the same size. Just a tad over 4GBs. If you subtracted your My Documents folder, what would that leave you? :icon_lol: Been to Redding once years ago. Summer time and when I drove across the dam at Shasta, the boats were so thick you could just about jump from one side to the other on the boats and never get your feet wet.

You can do that about right now but there no boats. The lake is LOW! ou can see part of old town in the summer.

This is about what it look like.

You may want to do update again. I've had to run the updates a few time to really get them all.

I cheated, it's "Easy Peasy"...a version of Ubuntu designed for the Eee.

I got 'em all, Allen. I'm not on auto updates. I use custum about once a week. Just checked now this morning and there was nothing available. I think your Windows installtion is bloated with something. By the way, I mispoke. Looking at a Google map, I realized I drove across the I5 bridge and not the dam.

Sandar,
if you by chance bought a Western Digital hard drive, you can on their website download free Acronis that will make an ghost image of your newly installed Windows and other software. Save it on an external hard drive, DVD, or whatever as a backup if needed.

I'm think the same thing too. But I can't find any thing.... I may buy a new drive and set it up a slave and find a antivirus that won't eat up a old gatway 500X. So if any of you know of one that is Low RAM and CPU, I'm all ears.

The last 2 summers we didn't even need the brige almost. All thats left of are lake is creek down there...
