Can you start on a carrier?

jp

Charter Member
Hey, is it possible to start on the deck of an aircraft carrier? I have aicarriers2, and been trying to do this, mostly by saving flights and then opening them, but can I place a carrier in a set location permanently? Also, if I can start on a carrier underway, that would be awesome too...

Thanks
Jp

It's a bit of a hassle, but yes you can. I can send you a file I have set up if you'd be interested.

My [FONT=verdana, sans-serif]carriertracks1and2.zip at Flightsim.com and Avsim.com has a number of saved flights that start on a carrier. There's also a tutorial on how to make your own flights here: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?19450-Making-AI-boat-plans.

Setting up saved flights that start on deck is tricky. One thing that definitely does NOT work is using slew to get on deck. It will look fine when you save, but when you reload the carrier will have moved. That being said, it may move even if you don't use slew! But the saved flights in my Carrier Tracks file have been tested multiple times, and they all work. If you want to substitute a different aircraft, there are instructions in the readme.txt.

You can save a flight on the deck of a moving carrier by editing a line in the .FLT file from SimOnGround=True to SimOnGround=False.

I'd still like John's file, too.

Yes John, I 'd be very interested in that file! Also, I'll give the other suggestion a try too.

Thanks,
Jp

As dhasdell mentioned you can save a flight on a carrier if you change the SimOnGround=True to SimOnGround=Flase, however you can't set it to the default flight. Well you can but it won't work.

Basically the default flight will start at whatever time local time is on your computer which generally means when you start the flight the carrier will be nowhere near where the aircraft is. If you load the flight it uses the time and date the flight was saved which means the carrier will be at the same place.

All this assumes you're using carriers on AI tracks as in dswo's files, if you're using AI Carriers it won't really work unless you pre-position things to allow you to start the carrier off before you start the flight. E.g. save the flight in slew mode and then when you load the flight use AI Carriers to start the ship off under your current position and then ext slew mode. This is actually handy if you want to use FS Recorder to film some carrier action.

Got the packages installed and the flight does start on a carrier deck of choice. Thanks for the H/U. The only thing now is (and you may call me stupid), how does the catapult work (and the cable for landing)?

Saved flight file, its really easy! as soon as your happy and where you want to be on the carrier just hit ALT and save your flight! Easy as that!

Okay gents, sorry for the delay...work was nasty last week. Attached is a Cold and Dark start on a moving carrier.
