Had to go to YVR yesterday. Traffic jams, 25 dollar an hour parking. Homicidal hacks, suicidally incompetent motorists. Thats just normal. What came next has me really thinking hard and for real about renouncing my citizenship and emigrating elsewhere.
I had time to spare, and had enough of getting shoved and elbowed and my feet trod on; so went out front to find a smoking pit and hack a butt. Young Asian gentleman drops his butt on the ground by his right foot. Ash can stands by his left foot. Did not even have to move to reach it, but no. Drop it on the ground.
OK. Big deal. In the grand scheme of things; who cares. Its a ciggi dib. What annoyed me was that the proper recepticle was right by is left hand. Its lazy, its rude.
So I walked slowly over, caught his eye, and nudged his butt with my toe. He puts me on ignore. Instead of grabbing him by the ipod and giving him a good jerk(my first instinct) I slooowly picked up his butt, gave it back to him, and pointed at the ash can untill he got the message and disposed of the butt in the proper recepticle, and carried on with my day. No words were exchanged, as my Cantonese is surely worse than his English.
9 minutes latter, the hand lands on my shoulder. I am confronted with 5 cops, 4 battons and one taser drawn. And, if any one is keeping score, 3 south asian cops, 2 asian cops. We are a multi-cultural, inclusive society, after all.
Apparently, this exchange was witnessed by a airport greeter who felt this exchange was threatening (though the litter bug in quetion seemed to be blissfully oblivious to his own exsistence) and felt compelled to scramble the uniformed pugilist squad to redress the situation.(quotations are the nice policeman's words for word) I was subjected to the usual intimidation, bluster, profanity, threatened with jail, and sternly admonished. My ID was demanded, and my information collected for inclusion in the 'unfavorable police interaction' database. The upshot was: according to the most beligerent cop, its 'not my f#&*!%# place to say anything'. Its 'bad for tourisim' when the 'locals' 'subject guests to abuse'. Do it again and I'll 'be sorry I was ever born' and 'You white bas@%$&! (I'm not wholly caucasian, BTY) think you own the place!'
!!!!
Wow. I'm not sure what to think. Filling a complaint is a waste of time up here. I guess I should be relieved that the nice guy with the gun has shown me the error of my ways, and has shown me in my proper place in my country.
Maybe Austrailia would have me.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Police at YVR have already killed one man, glad they did not taser you as well. The increasing powers of the Police and tolerance of abuse of "Whites" in Canada is becoming very concerning. Not sure how to state a case though without being branded a racist hick. I'm in Calgary and have had at least one friend told to leave an establishment in our 'Chinatown' because non-Chinese were not welcome, but that's not racist though. Land of the free indeed...

First, if you have a discreet way of turning your cel phone's record function on, do so.

Then you collect the names and badge numbers of each police officer present, including the ones who stand back and say nothing. Be persistant but polite. Be very polite. Keep your hands in view.

Then you lodge a complaint with the police dept.

Then you go to the press with your audio file. Maybe put it up on Youtube. Always more room for more viral.

The press really loves this sort of garbage. It's the age of instant, massive communication.

Use it.

The press love it, untill they are told to knock it off; but it makes no impact on E division, other than marking you for life- the 'unfavorable police interactions' file will have my name in it for life now, despite the fact that I have: Never been arrested. Have never been charged with an offence. I have been hauled in and held incommunicado for 48 hours for the offence of laying a licking on an armed robbery attempt, though! But rest assured, I am in that database as a bad, bad person. The complaints commision is, well. Laughable. Ian Bush, Robert Jakanski, the Cont. Montie Robinson fiasco, the Picton case. On and on it goes. look up the Ian Bush incident- appaling. Scary. And E division cannot fathom why only 1 person in 3 approve of the RCMP in BC.
I should not be suprised though. Here in Canada, we have a long tradition of non-accountability for our elected, appointed and police officials. The usual penalty for a RCMP member commiting a heinously unbelievable crime (look up Ian Bush and Montie Robinson) is ...wait for it....suspension with full pay(60000K+ yearly, full benni`s)
Oh well. Its just good to know where one stands in ones own society.

"For Canada! Where judges are appointed for life! And that can't be good for you!" - Ace McCool; Fugget about it.

At least in Yellowknife I have never seen that kind of behavior from Police or even the G Troop RCMP. Not even around Edmonton did I observe that kind of behavior. Must be something with Vancouver. Cant be Province wide or is it? Alberta is fun place. I guess if I went thru what you did, I wouldn't leave my nation with other Province's or Territories to move to. Plus side of NA, the US has 50 flavor's and a variety of territories, take ya pick. I suggest Texas or Alaska.

Maybe Austrailia would have me.

Not so sure about that Lazarus. Out here we are very fast getting to the stage where you go to a major town with a mate and play "Spot the Aussie". Make sure you get yourself a boat and come in via the North. That way you will get accommodation and meals provided and paid for as well as $200 a week for sitting on your arse doing nothing for about 12 months until they process you and decide you are a genuine refugee. And you have access to our Medicare system as well. Oh yes it will help if you can speak Pashtun, Arabic or Sri Lankan.

well you got off lucky

in canada .... its all a hassel but you live

america - they will shoot first, and then ask after

in eastern countries = they chop your head off . then freeze it and sell it back to your home country

'...go to a major town with a mate and play "Spot the Aussie"...':icon_lol: I thought I was the only one who played that. Started on road trips with gravel trucks years ago as a way to keep the lads amused, playing 'spot the white guy' has spread now to banks, airports, any government offices, police. Don't win very often:icon_eek:
'...in canada .... its all a hassel but you live'. Don't be certain of that. 22 KIA's while in custody in 4 years with a population of 30 million...thats not a number to be proud of. The 2 tiered judicial system here is also a cause for concern. The Saskatchewan Judge who famously ducked a rape/assault charge with the defence 'I was Drunk'. Got a walk. You or I would not even be allowed to enter a plea like that.
Same everywhere I guess. I suppose I just don't fit into polite society any more.:salute:

"I suppose I just don't fit into polite society any more."

Don't cut yourself short now. You'd be a perfect fit for Yellowknife Citizen, by the way you know how to shoot right? In reality there is no way in heck to play Spot a Canuk or Yankee in N.America lol. But, We can play spot the UK Redcoat lol.

Some people clearly have an anti-police axe to grind here. I have found over the years that if you extend politeness and courtesy to any law enforcement official in a reasoned and level headed manner, that same courtesy is returned. It is too easy to pick one or two well publicised example to make your point that the police are all ogres. The truth is that they perform many thousands of selfless and dangerous acts on your behalf daily, not all of which are part of the job. The overwhelming amount of police officers are honest, fair and responsible individuals and really do not deserve to but smeared thusly.
Just remember when people are running in one direction away from danger, who are the individuals running toward it.

Oh yeah and while I'm at it, quit knocking Canada. If you aren't happy then there is the obvious go live elsewhere answer. Yes there are faults, nowhere is perfect, but the country is consistently in the top 5 of best place in the world to live in many differing criteria. So where could one go? All the Scandinavian countries are above us often as not, other than that we are struggling to be bettered.
Again it's easy and trendy to knock. Go against the tide and be proud and pro-active for a change. Negativity is destructive.

Let's try and keep a lid on the politics people.
I understand why you're not a happy camper lazarus, I would be very pissed myself, but really, this is not the place to raise the subject.
And you'd certainly be welcome in the Great Southern Land, provided you go through the correct Immigration Procedure, DO NOT try the sea voyage.....:icon_eek:
I quite liked my Canadian visits, it's more about the people and their atitude than where they were born.
And I repeat, please avoid any further politics and/or racism.

:kilroy:

Wombat666, when commenting on the "new" Canada, it's hard to avoid controversy. Simply put, we have sold out to the third world and if you are white up here now, good luck.

genelmen ladies , you are talking but i dont hear reason and the mere fact there are always bad apples in every walk of life should not spol the rest of hard working people

be glad in canada still exists ....its white and our women do the talking .....

bottom line

What I Have Lived For...

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy -- ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness -- that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what -- at last -- I have found.

With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.

Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer. This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me."

I should not reply. I should not reply...

Some people clearly have an anti-police axe to grind here. I have found over the years that if you extend politeness and courtesy to any law enforcement official in a reasoned and level headed manner, that same courtesy is returned.

Thats what happened yesterday. I must have missunderstood what the nice police man was shouting in my face.

I must live in a different canada. I am a ridgidly honest man, often at great cost to my self. I do believe in honor. I used to put my country first always. I put my time in defence of my civilization, went in harms way, and went back against better judgement when my country called.

None of these things have I seen at E division. My personel experience, empiricle observation, and statistics say some thing elese. Time and time again we see uniformed thugs drunk on their own power, protected by corrupt leadership perfectly willing to alter evidence and purger themselves in court to hide wrong doing. Crime rates rise at the square of policing costs, which are astronomical. In case any one failed to notice, here the Mounties stuck us with an extra multi million dollar hit after settling the policing contract. Seems that after the negotiations-which already gave them a plum pay rise, the warlords decided that they needed a few mil more, and we`ll arbitraraly stuff it in, and back date it. No public disscussiuon. A huge, multi billion dollar fortress of vengance(new E division HQ), lavish on a scale that an oriental potentate would love goes up. No public disscussion. I see more police everywhere, more electronic surveilence, more biometric identification, our freedoms and rights eroded daily. And crime rates rise while Convictions fall. Every third world gangbanger wannabe is armed. I have watched $200 000 drug dealer 4x4`s blow red lights, tires smoking, RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE POLICE CRUISER, who did not move because the truck was carrying a motor cycle clubs`colors`. What does this suggest to you.
It seems to me that the RCMP are less a national police force, and more a private mercinary army beholden only to themselves. This is a huge problem. If it sounds like I have an axe to grind, it is be cause these supposed protectors of society dishonor themselves often and regularly. I hope every one is ready here for the big one, because when the 9.0 hits, forget about the RCMP helping you, like during KATRINA.the police will be too busy helping them selfs and a few select plutocrats. So Jimi Pattison is safe.
But there is always the law and order enthusiast who thinks the fuzz is great, and would hapilly live in the most oppresive police state imaginable if the nice police man says you will be 3% safer.
So sorry. Its not rosy. In fact; the situation is dire, top to bottom. The RCMP are just a symptom of a grave illness that is eating the heart out of western civilization.

police all over are a funny lot, some are fantastic and do their job to perfection, others use it to avoid the law themselves. It just seems very hit and miss which ones you get!
