I am emailing all the would-be leavers of FS9 development with Lionheart's news of Many Polys, in the hope they will have a second thought.

...and getting this kind of reply:

"Sorry it's impossible to easily produce ... for FS9, the only way it can be done is to import the model back into an older version of FSDS and then re-animate everything, I'd also have to redo all the gauges. A total nightmare and easily 6 months of my spare time to achieve. Hence why myself and many other designers are only designing for FSX, as the new design tools are geared to take advantage of the new coding and are not backward compatible.

Be interesting to hear from some other designers how much pain is involved to design for both FS9 and FSX?

That really sucks!! What part of the world are they living in where they think the economy is doing so great that they can do something like this?

I'm not for their decision at all. I like their models dammit!!

Well, as one who has done it (Howard DGA-15, SR-45 Princess, etc.) I am inclined to agree. I also use FSDSv3.51 which allows one to take the same source code and compile with Xtomdl into FSX or Makemdl into FS9. In spite of that it is very tedious redoing all the animations, redoing at least some of the gauges and reformatting the textures. I did the SR-45 for FSX and then later for FS9. It took me over 2 months and I then decided not to attempt another conversion.
My own personal reasons for no longer designing for FS9 are that I enjoy landing on moving carriers and towing gliders. I am 78 and just don't have the enthusiasim to design for both.

Cheers, Paul

........and we just came out with 'THE" FS9 Unlimited Export System...

arrgh...

What a loss. Their planes in FS9 were just brilliant...

palms to forehead....

If you want to blame someone, look no further than the Aces team. Why they had to make the design elements between FS9 and FSX so different is beyond me. I guess to take advantage of all sorts of new features. But the result is that FSX is quite a bit different from a design stand point that developers, especially payware developers, have to make a choice between designing for one or the other. Doing both these days has gotten to be impractical.

Face it boys, FS9 is nearly dead from a payware stand point.

Said by someone who can't even run FSX and uses and designs exclusively for FS9.

A decision I can understand and fully respect Paul, as sad as it is from my own perspective; the likes of you and Piglet are kind enough to share the fruits of your labour with us, but as you both now personally use FS X this makes sense.

I question though whether this is a wise decision for payware developers, to cut off a large potential customer base in order to concentrate on eye candy for a sim whose worth is still suspect - I probably could run FS X relatively well on my new system, but I chhose to run FS9 and customise it to my likings, rather than compromise to Microsofts!

Tend to agree with you - I sure hope that their FSX sales will make up for the loss of FS9 sales.

Sad news.... :(

BTW,

Putput I would like what plane is that you uses as avatar seens to be a convair tradewind, is it a fs2004 model?

This may be true.
Carenado took a business decision I have no problem to accept.

But considering what already has been released as FS9 payware and freeware for over six years now and what faithful free- and payware designers still release and will release (just take a look into the "freeware gems" thread!), I think we can fly all those brillant aircraft to the end of all times without getting bored!

Now if I only find a way to convert the KBT Electra to FS9... :banghead:

Cheers,
Markus.

No, it is native FSX. Right now it is on "hold" while I figure out what corrupted the source code so I can't get the props to spin. It does have contra-rotating props, but I learned how to handle those when I did the SR-45 Princess which has 10 props!

Best, Paul

Carenado Bows Out

From What I have read MS made the airplanes FSX harder to make...It dose not say why. I am just very glad MS got out of the FS bussness for good I hope, maybe Carenado will have a sale on thier FS9 planes.
