Casablanca class CVE skinpack by UncleTgt!

The Jeeps or Escort Carriers were a special interest of my grandftather (USN Commodore Ret, Class of 1912), and he took me aboard a number of ships in the moth ball fleet in San Diego before they became Japanese cars and razor blades. It was a remarkable experience and one I have never forgotten. I am glad to see them getting their "day" in various sims and nice to see the attention to detail given here. Well Done to all hands.

most of the CVEs were culled from the fleet in the 1950s as being outdated and obselete.

Dasuto,
My wife's Uncle Tom was part of VC-20 and flew Avengers off the "Katie B's" deck. Unfortunatly, I never met him as he had passed away before we were married. I'm told he was a quiet man and rarely spoke of his war years. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. If you want "Charlie 88", you can find it in my downloads. You can read more about the "Katie B" and VC-20 on their web site.

Thanks,
Bob

Very interesting.Yes, have found most vets rarely speak of their war experiences. I already use the excellent Charlie 88 skin, nice job.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Ships Add-Ons

Description: New Textures for Collins USS Kadashan Bay + LOD fix

This comprises a model LOD fix / workaround, plus new textures for depicting any of the Casablanca Class CVEs used in the Pacific during 1943-44. You will need to have copies of both the USS Kadashan Bay44 & HMS Ruler45 by Colin Glendenning. These are available at the Fox Four website.

This work is released with the consent of Tom Sanford.

First: Fixing the LOD fault

Unfortunately, the middle LOD of Collins USS Kadashan Bay44 contains a texture assignment error. The result is very soon after moving away from the vessel, the flight deck will appear to turn white.

Luckily, there are lots of similarities between his USS Kadashan Bay model, & his later HMS Ruler45 model. The model for the HMS Ruler45 does not reproduce the same LOD texture problem. The fix is simple. Take the Model folder contents of the HMS Ruler45 & copy it into the USS Kadashan Bay44 model folder. Allow the model.cfg to be overwritten.

Second: using the original textures (optional). If you want to use Collins original textures, you just have to rename them as follows:

Kadashan_Bay.bmp to HMS Ruler45.bmp
KFD44.bmp to Ruler45FD.bmp

There are some small omissions, but overall they are a good match just as they are. However, for those seeking more variety, read on:

Third: Using the new textures.

The zip includes a listing of CVEs assigned to operations in the Central Pacific during 1943-44. This listing became the master list for compiling the textures & flight deck markings, allowing you to create separate ships for each Casablanca Class CVE that took part in these operations.

I have also included a generic blank Flight Deck texture without ship numbers for those that want a single class entry to suffice!

The camouflage measures depicted are:

Measure 14 (usually the shipyard delivery paintjob for CVEs during 1943).
Measure 21
Measure 22
Measure 32-4A
Measure 32-10A
Measure 32-12A
Measure 32-15A
Measure 33-10A
Measure 33-14A
Measure 33-15A

Obviously the listing is far from complete, but it can easily be added to if there is a need.

Texture Installation: Simply copy the chosen textures into the texture folder of your (fixed) USS Kadashan Bay44.

Creating more Casablanca class CVEs:

Copy the whole USS Kadashan Bay44 ship. Rename the new ship folder to your chosen ship name, for example USS Petrof Bay44

With ships, you have to also open up the ship.cfg file and modify the following lines as the sim wants the folder name, the DP file and the sim name in the ship.cfg file to be the same.

[fltsim.0]
title=USS_Kadashan_Bay44 - change to USS_Petrof_Bay44
sim=USS_Kadashan_Bay44 - change to USS_Petrof_Bay44
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=

Save your amended ship.cfg. Once done, rename to DP file to match the "sim=" name. In our example USS_Kadashan_Bay44.dp becomes USS_Petrof_Bay44.dp

Thanks to:

Collin Glendenning - gone but not forgotten, Collin gave CFS2 a legacy in his library of ships that were both incredibly detailed yet easy on frame rates. The quality is such that newer Flight Sims are benefitting from his work as his models are converted for use in FSX.

This is freeware and subject to the usual conditions

UncleTgt,

Geez...so many releases at once! I've rubbed off on you! :very_drunk:

and for those that want to know what the different patterns look like...

Such great work, thanks so much, will work very well with my upcoming CVE campaign. Question, would you happen to have a CFG entry so can start on the elevator? Then move to the catapult, instead of starting at very rear of deck.My campaign will require the captapult as no way to take off a fully loaded TBF from CVE without it.FM@ is questionable depending on the payload.Figured starting on the elevator which is just behind starboard cat would be great. Will include instructions in the final readme for my campaign. I tried to create one but after some trial and error, not much luck.

Dasuto,

But wouldn't starting on the elevator would require you to start the engine & taxi to the catapult, whereas in real life the Flight Deck handlers would push you onto the cat (at least you would be guaranteed to end up facing in the correct direction)?

Me, I wouldn't trust myself to taxi anywhere accurately on a flight deck...:costumed-smiley-034

I'll try & come up with something, but I'm not sure it's practical...

Good point but one of those compromises since we dont have deck handlers in CFS 2. I taxi to the cat all the time, but it does cause delay in takeoff, which can be problematic in creating missions for joining up with friendlies at proper times and many may find it very difficult and tedious to taxi down the deck, which is why I was thinking start on the elevator, can start up engine, short and easy taxi to the starboard catapult or even port if player feels like it.Main thing is in my camapaign the cat is a necessity since taking a full loaded Avenger off CVE's rarely succeeds.I have done it but crashed attempting to and was used on CVE's for the big boys.

Here you go.

zip contains ship.cfg with aircraft positioned on the fwd elevator (but CFS2 doesn't always load at exactly the same point). Copy of the original ship.cfg included (just in case).

Just want to say thanks for this and your excellent work on the CVE's, really are great ships and working well with the campaign am building.Just wish someone knew how to remove the deck lights but oh well.

The elevator takeoff cfg works great.

Unc,
Nice work. Putting a new "Katie B" into service. Thanks for all the new CVE's.
Bob

Sorry it's taken so long to start on these, but you know how easily distracted I get...:playful:

Not a problem, just about finished with part 1(Saipan) of my CVE campaign, soon as these are ready will add them into the missions involving the Sangamons and all will be ready.Thank you for your work as always.
