• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

The Caudron C.450 and C.460 Rafale ("Squall") were French racing aircraft built to participate in the Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe race of 1934. They were low-wing cantilever monoplanes of conventional configuration. Powered by a Renault 456, 224 kW (300 hp) 6 cyl. engine, the aircraft was capable of speeds in excess of 300mph. In 1936, Michael Detroyat raced a C460 at the National Air Races, in Los Angeles. It was the first, and only time that a foreign aircraft was entered in the Thompson.

The C460 was equipped with air operated retractible gear, which was very advanced for it's day. It raced with a 330 horsepower engine, the less-powerful of two engines brought for the event.

Detroyat won both events, the Greve at 247.300mph, and the Thompson at 264.261mph.

An authentic replica of the C460 has been built by Aerocraftsman, Inc, in Riverside California. The replica uses a LOM M337CE, Czech made, 260 h.p., fuel injected, of similar performance to the original 6-cylinder Renault Bengali. (Not quite as peppy) The aircraft was shipped to Europe, and debuted at the Paris Airshow at Le Bourget.
