This squadron was part of the "Replacement Air Wing" at NAS Oceana (Norfolk/Virginia Beach) - tail code "AD" for all squadrons. In the 60s and 70s the RAG wing trained pilots in the F-4, A-6 and F-14 for replenishment of fleet squadrons also located there.

VA-43 was an "instrument training squadron", where pilots from all the squadrons on the base took their annual instrument qualification flight checks (usually two flights for experienced pilots). The F-9 had a collapsible canvas hood with wire hoops - sort of like a baby buggy hood - that the "student" raised up over his head so he could not see outside. Most jet pilots were quite familiar with the F-9, because so many had gone through advanced flight training in it. Even senior officers who had not flown one in perhaps a year were soon comfortable in it.

Later the squadron transitioned to the TA-4F (the TA-4J had not come on line yet), which had a radar and full weapons system in it, unlike the TA-4J (the TA-4J had no radar - the space was filled with a metal blanker plate and an ID-249 for use int tracking a TACAN radial; the GS function was inop because tactical aircraft did not have VHF nav or ILS. The weapons system was very simplified for practice ordnance only).

In the mid 70's it also assumed a role as a local adversary squadron for ACM training.
