From 1939 to 1943 Watton was used by the RAF as a light bomber airfield. From 1943 to July 1945, the 2nd Air Division was placed in the 3rd Strategic Air Depot in the adjacent Neaton, servicing and repairing B-24 Liberators. From April 1944 to July 1945 Watton housed the 802nd Reconnaissance Group (Provisional), a weather photo recon unit that operated over the Atlantic Ocean and later by day and night over enemy occupied territory.
