I'm going to guess that's a temporary placeholder. Clearly, there isn't a second RPM gauge there. In fact on my 310R, that is an open area with nothing there. In fact, it's a rather large unused area of the panel. I have seen some owners put something like a Garmin MX-200 there.

As I can save up the war chest, that's what I'm thinking about putting in that empty slot on my aircraft. I hope to have that done to coorespond to ADS-B going operational throughout CONUS. When that will happen I do not know.

As a developer, one of the main complaints I get from people are on 2D panels as everyone now has a moderately wide spread assortment of screen dimensions and proportions, which means the 2D panels go flat, squashed, crunched, etc. With this comes problems and issues with some computers not being able to render gauges in squashed instances, thus cutting frame rate performance.

With each new release that I do, I was going to cancel doing 2D panels and each time I give in and each time I get complaints from people that only fly via 2D panel mode and want a 2D panel that fits their personal screen.

Difficult....

I hate empty holes... hence the reason I filled it. Figured we have two engines.. why not two RPM gauges... (of course, they do have two needles.. .each) (oh well, not such a good idea after all?)

As for the 2D panel... no 2d panel will be implemented. However, as stated before, we will have a flat, clean main panel so that those with the reality XP gauges can put them on.

A lot of aircraft have empty holes for gauges that can be filled/upgraded at later dates if and when you decide to add stuff. My guess would be is that empty hole in Ken's 310R is for the turbo boost gauge that comes in some special 310 aircraft. I have never been able to find a cockpit pic of said aircraft though (Riley Turbostream 310) so I am not sure what actually goes there. As far as 2D panels though I can agree they really have no place in a GA bird since everything is in front of you, but I use 2D panels a lot for more complex aircraft, especially when stuff is out of normal range or at odd angles with my just looking around the cockpit. I don't use Track IR so maybe that is why I still like them.. Just makes things more convenient to me.

Actually, the hole on the lower left I haven't a clue if anything ever went there.

The smaller one on the lower right of the yoke however, I know that it used to house a radar altimeter. And I still have the old circuit breaker for it (pulled and banded of course), as well as two toggle switches on the pilot's side c/b panel!

I'm not sure there's a more dark art for aircraft than panels!

When I was building the cockpit, I had about 20 shots of 15 differant 310's, and every cockpit each had a VERY unique gauge layout. I decided to base the layout off of the 310's manuals, but they had gauges in there that simple arnt used anymore. We dropped in an extra RPM till we could decide what to do with the extra slot. The pitfalls of production. You should of seen the mess we had with the Vision that kept changing in the middle of production! It felt like Cirrus was trying to make my life more difficult just for fun!
