Cfs2 on external hd...

Hi guys,
Recently my desktop crashed and took everything with it:redfire:, save what I had on some thumbdrives. I am trying to rebuild but my temp. rig's HD is too small. It is ancient!! Anyway I am trying to rebuild on on a USB external HD. Has anyone ever did this? Will the CFS2 run?
I have a copy of one of my theaters on the thumb but when I load it on the external( which is designated as a "D" drive on the laptop I am using) and try to run CFS2 it keeps telling me the game should be on "C". I keep looking but can't find the file for the settings to direct the game to any other drive other than "C". Where is that saved?
-Is there anyway I can redirect the game to the "D"?
-Do I have to load from the diskset to "D" to change this and not copy from the thumbdrive?
-Can the game even run on the external or is this a futile effort?

Any help and guidance appreciated

CFS2 should be able to be ran from a D drive. I did it once but it wasn't from an external but from one installed as a "slave" drive.

CFS2 on external drive

I'm on Win 7 and both my installs are on an external hard drive - you can either copy from your 'C' drive or on a new install browse to required location then just put a shortcut on your desktop

Fibber,
Are you saying that you are inserting the memory stick and then where are clicking to start the sim?

If you are clicking on a desktop icon to start, then that is the problem. If not, then? Or you need to find the cfs2.exe file on the memory stick, and click on that.

The other thing is that I hope you have the whole of the CFS2 installation on that memory stick, if not then that will cause problems.

Cheers

Shessi....

...I am putting this on a external HD to run the game from. Right now all the mods that I saved are spread through a pile of thumbdrives. Real pain trying to gather them together. The thought to put them on these was late as I had a external HdD that I was relying on which ultimately did fail with the main rig.
Right now the stock will run but my different theaters will not as won't all my planes that are aliased to a "Engine sounds" file that is separate from the theater files but is within Microsoft Game\Combat flight Simulator 2
IE: Setup is now D:\Microsoft Games\Combat Flight Simulator 2\Engine sounds , then followed by the theater designations ETO, PTO, Korea . Hope this clarifies what I have.
QC also will not initialize in these added non stock theaters and I get the failed database warning. This is getting really fustrating. Almost makes me want to give up.

Addendum for shessi...

..I just re-read for the the fourth time your post and the reading comprehension of my youth suddenly went :pop4: hit! No, I am not using a Icon I go to the theater and start from the CFS2.Exe icon.

Ha ha ha!
I'm glad you did re-read, as I'd only ask the same question again!

What OS are you using?

Well that's good that you are going to the icon on the memory stick. I think the reason why that warning comes up is because of cfs2.exe target setting which will be C:\cfs2.exe, this was set when you copied over the theatre to the memory stick from the C: drive. Which you cannot alter. Try making a shortcut to the cfs2.exe on the memory stick, see if this works. If not then right mouse click on that shortcut and go to properties, then the shortcut tab. Here you can alter the start target location. Make sure it all points to the memory stick drive, if not change it, save and give that a go.

If no go, the best way then is to install a fresh vanilla copy of CFS2 to a memory stick, it's only some 850-900Mb in size. Then copy and duplicate either on that memory stick or others for other use.

You could then try copying that newly created cfs2.exe file to your theatre install, which will have the D: drive install setting that you need. Then try firing it up.

Or you could copy over your files from your theatre stick to the new installation, replacing only the files you need ie SCENERY, AIRCRAFT, mesh etc, to get the theatre layout and ac you need, not all the files as you will overwrite and be back to square one.

It should work, as CFS2 is a simple game and will work from external drives.

Cheers
