CFS2 scenery textures in CFS3

Fiddling around here. I wanted to see if I could brighten up the scenery in RS and make it look more like real South Pacific jungle, but alas, no joy. I'm not sure RS like me... So I went back to my vanilla install and messed about with that. It needs some tweaking to say the least, but it's starting to go where I want it to... Opinions?

Starting to find things...

Clearly not jungly enough yet, but I rather like it already!

Looking good Nigel, glad to see someone else who's interested in fiddling with the ground textures.
The RS set was taken from Google Earth, Hawaii so does not suit everywhere else in the install.
Maybe a .bat to swap texture sets in and out would work?

My only issue with cfs2 textures are their low resolution. Looking at your pics above, the tree types could do with improving too.

What number are your sliders on?

I'm proud of the fact that I know where to find a bdp file or how to read a mission xml....sort of....but these terrain and scenery tweaks always seemed on beyond zebra to my meager skills and I admire those like you who can and do so fearlessly. Here's my opinion...always thought the RS scenery somewhat monotone and flat and wholly applaud your efforts to change that........so many great planes but not a lot of eye candy elsewhere...so....carry on!!! thanks....

I don't doubt the accuracy of the original textures, but they just look depressing to me! Here are the latest, but I've gone too far and want to reintroduce a few earth-coloured ones to the mix. I'm on sliders 3, which is about all my ancient rig can handle! I've had to remove all the other theatre files, because despite the batch file, CFS3 seems to look in all of them - so if one set of textures is different, it's likey to get ignored. I think the safest way would be to have the Icmosaic files OUTSIDE the install, in fact.

I've actually stuck several "squares" of textures from CFS2 together to form tiles the same size as the CFS3 ones, so the resolution issue could be worse... Though they do lack crispness, I admit. No idea how to resolve this as my only attempt at messing about with texture budgets ended badly...

Have a look at the landclasses.xml Nigel. If you alter this you can have different textures showing so I think just swapping out different versions of this file is all that's needed.

You may get a slide show but what does it look like with terrain and scenery on 5?

It does look very tropical and sunny in your pics, could do with some of that around here!

Actually, it does run on 5s, but doesn't look any different. Good idea though about the landclasses and mos files - gives me an excuse to reinstall the mos editor! Anyway, editing the mos files is frustrating - I get it looking absolutely perfect in the editor, but once it's in the sim, it looks nothing like it at all. One problem seems to be the diameter of the rings - the highest level ring is scarcely bigger than the aircraft itself! That needs fixing too, but I have no idea how...

Cheers, Ian - I've never seen SEA jungle, so I've got no idea myself.

Not sure about the isolated trees... Might take those out.

Dunno...........maybe leave the isolated trees for awhile: see if they blend a bit eventually.... Occasionals crop up?

I've not seen SE Asia jungle, but I have spent some time over the jungles of PNG and the darker color currently in RS suits them fairly well, particularly in the more mountainous areas. Vegetation tends to be a little brighter at lower elevations nearer the coast. But there should also be scattered open patches of short kunai grass with maybe a tree or two or some scrub in them. The tall dense elephant grass that dominates modern pictures of these area are not correct for WWII as it is an invasive species which arrived later.

edit: forgot to add that there should be scattered burned areas throughout as the locals slash and burn agriculture methods constantly have them burning out new areas for planting while letting older sites be reclaimed by jungle.

i tend to think the above would be suitable for much of the area currently in RS with the exception of China and parts of CBI.

I think RS has only one landclass defined currently (except China I think) so more will need to be added to fully represent the terrain.

I can't imagine the fun the terrain people have with this - I've had trouble enough with one single scenery mos file... :isadizzy: The one thing probably explains the other...

Looking at aerial photos of the PNG rainforest, it is darker and more olive-green coloured than my textures, I agree, but not as lugubrious as the Hawaii textures perhaps - they make me feel as though I'm about to sail up the Congo looking for Mr Kurtz!

There is an advantage to using the cfs2 textures in that if you fly both sims you get continuity between the two. I have the cfs3 BoB textures in both my cfs2 and BoB2 installs for example which makes them all look broadly similar. Is your work in a form that you can share it yet Nigel? Would like to have a look myself. :)

ndicki,

If you go through the scenery files for CFS2 at SOH you will find textures for different areas.I know the PNG was redone and someone converted FS9 textures to work in CFS2. Someone else redid the textures for the Pacific. Maybe going through them you will find what you are looking for.
