CFS2/Win7

Hi,

I have recently started replaying some of my older games and have encountered a problem running CFS2. The last time I played with it on my desk top I had an older OS. I am now running Win7 on a new HP desk top. I had saved all of my game files on a flash drive and then transferred them to my new hard drive, where they were apparently installed correctly. I played CFS3 (w/several addons) FSX and others with no problems, but when I clicked on the icon for CFS2 it at first wouldn't load at all, but after several tries I got to the welcome screen and clicked play, but nothing happened. I have tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling the game, changing the compatibility setting (there was a Win7 option) and have also tried launching it directly from the exe.file in the CFS2 folder, all to no avail. I took my machine to a tech who could also not get it to run, and his opinion was that the game was too old to work with newer OSs like Win7. Is this true? I can still play the game on my old laptop which uses XP. Is there a way to make CFS2 run on machines with Win7, or am I just out of luck? I would also like to build up my library of flyable aircraft in Il-46 and I was wondering if there was a way to mod CFS 2/3 planes to make them work in Il-46, and if so how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have CFS2 on my Win7 and works fine but others have found probs with graphic cards. I would install CFS2 to the main C: drive to avoid any permission bugs and make sure your running as Admin.

The other thing you will want to do is right click the icon and hit properties.

Not only do you want to run it as administrator, you also want to run it in compatibility mode for XP SP3.

Hi,

Make sure you also have User Accounts Control (UAC) under the User Accounts tab of your control panel turned off.

a possibility...

I also have a Win7 system. Several months ago, I encountered a situation where right after a windows and a Norton update, all my .cfg and.dat files disappeared as did the empty sound and panel folders of my ships. . I'm not sure which it was, but if you check and see that your game .cfg and .dat files are not in place, then the same thing happened to you. Don't panic, just reload the installs from your backup if that be the case. In my case it seemed to be just a 1 time glitch.

Just got a new laptop with an i7-4790K & Nvidia GTX970m 6Gb GPU - running Win7Pro. Load up CFS and.........won't run. Same thing, I've tried installing in different drives etc, (I've got 2 SSD's and a HDD)...nothing. Tried running in XP SP3 mode......nope! Now I've taken the plunge and uploaded Win 10 Pro. I'll try again next weekend when I've got more time to think about it.........:banghead:

Hi NavyAce,

you certainly can run CFS2 on a windows7 machine. I am running it successfully on a windows7 Home Premium laptop and a windows7 Home Premium desktop. I did have an issue initially with some very old aircraft models not displaying but a windows update fixed that.

It is not completely clear from your post, it sounds like you just copied the files from the flash drive to the new hard disk. You then say you uninstalled and reinstalled - but at any point did you actually run the install from the CDs? I think the problem you are having might be because there are no entries for the program in the registry. So if you haven't tried installing from CDs I recommend that you try it, make sure you run it as administrator. Once that is done you can copy again all your addon files etc from you flash drive.

I have all my CFS2 installs under C:\Flightsims\ and many other posters on these forums have suggested that you do not install to c:\Program files (x86) - I never did so can't comment.

Once installed modify the file properties (and any shortcuts) to run as administrator. I have not modified the properties of any of mine to run in any XP compatibility mode and not doing so hasn't caused any problems at all.

Neither have I turned off UAC - so yes every time it asks me do I want to allow this program to run and every time I say yes. I leave UAC turned on so that I and any other users of these PCs don't inadvertently run any malware programs without a chance of stopping it.

Finally, have you checked the Event Viewer for any error messages when you attempt to run CFS2? If you don't know where to find it ... Start | Run | eventvwr.msc

Good luck,

Steve
