Check out this new technology

when i see one i'll believe it flies. having seen similar fans operate in the hvac trade for the last 20+ yrs, and never saw a heat pump leave the ground :icon_lol:

I saw this last year. Very ineresting design. What if this were more stable then the present VTOL ship we have now? You never know what some new design might be capable of..

I liked his discriptions of it. Flying mower... :d

Very novel approach to generating lift. Seems to work in small scale, would like to see what it will do in a larger scale.

Cool post, but they may be overrating this thing a little bit. It's clearly not "one of the few truly new aircraft since the wright brothers".

One of the few truly new aircraft since the Wright Brothers

I'd say that is an accurate statement considering the propulsion system being used. The Wright Brother's first plane had an internal combustion engine driving a prop. This propulsion system really hasn't changed all that much in a hundred years. Engine spins the prop, prop makes the plane go. Turbo props are just a variation on Wilbur and Orville's design. Helicopters brought about a new propulsion system with the rotor blade. It provides lift and propulsion. At first helos were powered by internal combustion engines, then by turbo-shaft engines...but still the same basic propulsion system. True jet propulsion is only the 3rd unique type of propulsion system ever developed for heavier than air aircraft in the 100 years since Wilbur and Orville started the whole thing. Rocket or ram jet powered aircraft are there in the mix...but as propulsion systems go, not really all that good for sustained flight over longer distances. This Fan Wing....it really is a new propulstion system and a new type of aircraft...and one of a very few truly new aircraft based on its means of propulsion.

Sorry I forgot to add the warning: DANGER StumbleUpon can be hazardous to your home and work life. Take adequate precautions.

Our neighbors back in San Diego had one of those. Coolest lawn mower. His front yard was a huge rounded hill thing so running it over the edge with a regular mower would have been a big chore. His hover mower made it pretty easy.

Visually it's a marginal application of Bernoulli's theory but I have to question it's safety in the event of engine failure. Doesn't appear to have glide capabilities, and auto-rotation is out of the question.

Yep, I wonder about glide capability as well. Does look like the wings would provide much lift during a power-out gliding descent.
