Check this out...General Aviation Serves America

Didn't know that Han Solo (Harrison Ford) was a pilot. I don't have much info on what the government is up to that threatens General Aviation, but what ever it is, it ain't good.

PS: I signed the petition!

I did too.

Some of the Stuff is coming from the TSA. For example. Under the old rules, if you had a valid ID badge from one airport, you were allowed to use that ID at any Commercial (IE: having airline service) Airport in the non secured areas without escort. The non secured areas were typically the GA ramp and parking areas. With a valid ID, a person was allowed in the secured area (Airline and gate areas) under escort by someone with a valid secured area ID for that airport. For example, When I worked at BTV, my security badge had escort privileges. I often found myself escorting aircraft mechanics from the airlines who had flown in to work on a plane.

The big problem is now, with the new rules, if I have a badge from BTV I can't use it if I go to say, MHT before, if I was on the GA ramp, I could be unescorted. Now I would have to shell out money out of my own pocket to obtain a security badge for every airport I could travel to... Before I could have unescorted ramp acess.

And by unescorted access, I mean simply walking from my plane to the FBO office. And back again. Unless a properly badged person escorted me back and forth.

This essentialy will, at many airports put the self serve fuel providers out of buisness since once you step out of your plane, you are in violation of the TSA regulations and face arrest and fines.... Unless there is someone waiting there to escort you. which kind of negates the cost savings of self serve fuel because the provider will now have to pay someone to act as an escort at the self serve pump.

None of this will prevent anyone with a nefarious intent from causing mayhem because by leaving from a small unsecured airport they will bypass any security anyway. And it's not like they would follow the rules in any event anyway.

One of the other new regs is baggaage and passenger screening for charter aircraft that can carry more than six people. That's your average King air or PC-12 people. Or even a Cessna 207...

Makes me want to scream sometimes...

I signed it as well.

Harrison is in charge of the Junior Eagles group (children members of EAA).

He is also the owner of a classic vintage DeHavilland Beaver. (and a FS Viking :d ).

Bill

Does anyone recall Ford using his Beaver to save people from something.....like a search & rescue, or maybe it was something with forest fires.... hhm.... I can't remember....

Another Celebrity...

Michael Dorn (best known as "Worf")

..."Dorn enjoys flying, something he was not permitted to do while in The Next Generation but was apparently able to do after joining the cast of Deep Space Nine. He has flown with the The United States Navy's Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, popularly known as the Blue Angels, first performed in 1946 and was the world's first officially sanctioned military aerial demonstration team....
as well as the Thunderbirds. Dorn owns several aircraft, including an old Air ForceUnited States Air Force

The United States Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the Military of the United States and one of the uniformed services of the United States....
T-33 Shooting Star trainer jet, an F-86 Sabre The T-33 is often referred to as "his starship." Michael Dorn also serves on several organizations, one of which is the Air Force Heritage Foundation where he is on the advisory board. Dorn has also done interviews for the "Private Jets" episode of Modern Marve". He is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) (Wikipedia)

The assault on General Aviation is very real and stretches from security restrictions, restrictions on air space, to taxes and disparaging comments from legislators regarding the use of aircraft.

Please sign the petition.

BTW, Dorn sold his F-86. He said in an interview that there were just too many restrictions on flying it.

Thanks TeaSea for the heads up and about Michael Dorn. I wasnt aware he worked that close with the AirForce. Cool to hear.

I know he had at least one private jet and a Sabre. Sorry to hear he sold it. Horrible.

Man, if they take away General Aviation, I could could definately consider moving to another country. I love America, but I love flying.. I guess I can love her from another country..

Bill

Mike Dorn's Sabre now belongs to Ed Shiply.... Mike sold it to Frank Borman who had Fighter Rebuilders in Chino go through it. Then Frank sold the aircraft to Ed.

Mike sold it for another reason. He needed a bigger plane to haul the family. He at least stayed with a NAA product. He bought a Sabreliner.

Micheal's Sabre came from South Africa and as far as he could tell. It had combat time.
