Children Who Get Spanked Have Lower IQs

I think they have it backwords, low I.Q.s lead to spanking and not the other way around!!

naww, success thru discipline is the key. back before the internet and cell phones when spanking was still an approved method of disciplining a child, kids had manners and discipline or they just might get a whoppin'.
now-a-days children seem to rule their (liberal) parents with unruliness.
they expect to receive without earning. maybe thats why television and cinema has turned into the art of the re-make and the re-mix. no original ideas, just repackage someone elses. new ideas need a little discipline to come to fruition but it is far easier just to redo something that has already been handed to you.

.. and yes i was beaten and have a high IQ

I'm just glad I got my kids raised before the no spanking thing got so bad. I raised 'em like I was and they're all well adjusted adults now. O' course that still don't explain me... ;)

Seems to me that the kids who get spanked would get smarter as they'd be trying to figure out how to keep it from happening again.

.. and solveing the whole issue by just not getting caught in the first place :icon_lol:

I knew it was only a matter of time - a spanking thread in the Outhouse.

Actually, there's spanking and, well, spanking :a1089:

I think we need Cloud9Gal's opinion on this one...........

Dang, after reading this thread, I have to feel sorry for all the little crumb-crunchers growing up in some of you people’s houses. Seems there’s a lot of “character building” going on out there. “Shut-up kid, it’s only blood, you’ll grow more!!” (* whack!! *)

I was belt whipped once. I don't remember exactly what I did, but I remember being warned repeatedly to stop, then out came the belt. It was a wide, leather belt, formed into a loop and applied to my hind end. It didn't really hurt, but the noise of the leather slapping together made a real impression. Whatever I did, I evidently never did it again, so it must have worked!

Kids are smart, they are like sponge, they absorb anything.... Their upbringing shows their character. It is how we, parents, help them and guide them to where they will be in the future.

When I was growing up as a kid, I remember I was spanked to be disciplined, (not with a belt, or anything like that). But yes, I was spanked. I have four sisters and no brother, and my Dad was with the USAF. And yes, he did not have to open his mouth, he just look at us and we know what he meant!

I have slapped my daughter's hand to discipline her when she was a little girl, she's now 8, she's a normal 8 - turning 32! At an early age, I have taught my girl, who is the parent in this home; and I pray she will be a smart, behave kid when she grows up!

spanking or no spanking does not determine a High IQ or Low IQ!

And Henry is the living proof :icon_lol:

Actually you are close here. These studies are correlational, not causal. At best they indicate that many people with high IQ were not spanked. Your comment shows the more likely reason for this.

I was spanked as a child, and my last IQ test was 156, which places me in the top one percentile range. I've been a member of Mensa for the past forty-five years...

Gosh, what might it have been if my folks hadn't spanked me! :icon_lol:

With one exception, every spanking I ever received was more than well-deserved. I told my parents years later that I just considered it as punishing an act for which I hadn't been caught... :ernae:
There were no schools for the gifted back then, and I honestly think my acting out was primarily the result of sheer boredom!

Dang! Fr. Bill posted something so similar to what I had to write! He's got a few points on me, my IQ is only 148. I read at a Grade 6 level a full year prior to entering Kindergarten. I grew up as a natural speed reader, capable of reading a 500 page novel in under 90 miinutes... casually, not pushing at all. In the Air Force, I could fault-find a wiring problem by 'seeing' where a certain set of symptoms would come from.

I was spanked, and caught a wooden spoon a few times... and a leather belt twice. My only question, if spanking reduced my IQ... What would I have become if not spanked? Assuming I didn't end up an asocial psycopath?
