Great airfields on the north coast of New Guinea. Many were fought over and then by passed on MacArthur's march back to the Philippines and eventually Japan.

Here is But West in the summer (December) of 1943. You can see But East down the coast. By the way, the remains of these old airfields still show up on satellite imagery on Google Earth. Unfortunately, the current tile for But, PNG is still an older low-res image, while the areas around it (including Wewak) are now in high-res. Anyway, it's got enough resolution to show that Pen32 really hit the nail on the head with these airfields.

Thanks Again Partner;

There's some historical data in the Read Me file on each of the fields. Even a partitial list of who was HQ'ed at each one and their fate after the Aussies recaptured a portion of the area. Wewak-Wirui and Boram both were used to some degree by the RAAF afterward.

Time to go play in the rain, horse chores still gatta be done...

Looks good... thanks! :applause: No conflict with MR's PNG GSL, right?

No problem Shadow, good to be back in the scenery saddle again.

no, No, NO. The last thing we need is that. MR and I do talk. We won't be overlapping anything or anyplace. Now or in the future. We're trying to fill in and fix the major gaps in the PNG area so people can build missions and campaigns and have all of the major locations there and waiting. Also we want to fix the really bad errors in the stock fields. Yes there's more to come. I have at least 1 new location and 3 stock locations I'm going to be looking at before I roll into another "Big Location" with multiple fields. And once again MR and I will be talking as well as listening to what other people might be developing.

The one thing this scenery does do is wipe out the GSL at the stock Wewak location. Which is wrong to begin with. They, MS, put theirs at the base of Cape Wom. Now there was a very small crash strip at Cape Wom and but it was out on the peninsula. What I did was renamed the stock field in the airbases.dat to "Cape Wom Crash Strip" and went about putting Wewak Central - Wirui in the correct place. Along with the town and small harbor of Wewak where it belongs. I left a Hut at the stock location and that's it. In the near future I'm going to get with MR and find out how to wipe it clean and be done with it.

It may not be up until tomorrow as it is Christmas.

This could very well drag me back to the Pacific from the Middle East/Europe theatres, I've started a repaint of the Alphasim Beaufort in the colours of a 100 SQN RAAF machine 'Scotty's homin Pidgin'. Ravenna kindly sent me a converted model to work on and as with all Alpha planes they are a pleasure for repainters. I have placed a pair of Lewis guns in the nose cos I cant find any Brownings.

Nice looking bird! No. 100 Sqn you say...Hum...

1 questions, how are the FPS with say, 8 or 9 of them in sight? Sometimes A/S birds are great on FPS and then there are some that just look great but kill your FPS with anymore than a couple.

Just looked, this is an FS9 bird isn't it, which ,means no Multi-Res...Drat.

Thanks for the reply. I love building scenery too. I built two fictional bases - mainly for on-line "hops" - half way between Wewak and Hollandia (pic 1) and half way between Wewak and Alexishafen (pic 2) as well as others They are already (for about a year now) uploaded here in the "Shadow Bases" scenery package. Check em out if you like.

Pen32Win -

Great looking bases! I'll need to rework some old missions and campaigns but it is well worth the effort with this quality of scenery.

Thanks too for the MB layouts. Those really help. :ernae:

Watchdog,

Great looking work on that Beufort and those bases! Will you be releasing a package with the converted CFS 2 Beaufort model too? Hope so as she'll be a great addition to the Southwest Pacific. I've been flying the FS 9 Beaufort without bombs in the kindler and gentler flight sim, but a CFS 2 version would be most appreciated.

With all the new bases and planes, it's a great day on the north shore of New Guinea to be sure!

Thanks Gents;

CC - I'm glad to hear that you have found value in the Fully Loaded Layouts. It was something new I wanted to try to help mission builders save time and help lend a historical aspect to their missions where A/C parking locations and AA Battery location are concerned.

SW - First off, your work looks great. You should do some historical fields. It's a bit more work with the research but I think you should jump in to the recreation portion. Your stuff more than warrants it. Have you ever thought about doing some of the other fields around Kahili? That's another area that could use some more work. If I'm not mistaken your base between Hollandia and Wewak is in the area of S03*00.75, E142*03.88. My next historical field will be Tadji which is at S03*11.13, E142*26.02.

I hope you all enjoy these Airdromes. There are many more I intend to do in good time. Since I needed a break from the Midway stuff I've found the Forgotten War of PNG to be quite interesting and plan to make it a not so forgotten place to fly and fight. I've done a lot of reading on the PNG Campaign as of late and I think history has given the men involved the short end of the stick. IMHO the boys of the 5th AF and RAAF deserve more than they got. If in some small way I can help to bring light to their gallent fight it will be time well spent.

Thanks Again Boys, any and all comments and thoughts are welcome.

Hi Jagd, Ravenna did the conversions for me and they come with AI versions that are gentler on the frame rates so if its OK with him I'll upload the bundle. I've been doing some research on RAAF ops with the Beaufort and they had quite a war! The Alphasim model has quite a few detail differences from the DAP MKVIII, there were no trailing edge extensions, a different turret, detail differences in the nose glasshouse and the RAAF planes didnt have that DF radome on top and I cant alpha channel it out. :banghead: but it is a Beaufort and easier to repaint than the CFS2 native version.

Pen32Win,

Great work on these airbases! :ernae: Why do I get the sense you guys are trying to lure me to the Pacific?

Hey Rami the Pacific Theater is as exiciting as the European Theater in my opinion. You should try it.

Many of its aspect are unique that will probably will be never repeated in Modern Military History. Like the Island campaign across the Pacific is one aspect that will never reapeated in History. the rapid Japanes in the early part of the War 1941-1942. Another one is the the Carriers wars and the Kamikazee attacks on our fleet. Battles like the one on Iwo Jima and the most three demensional Battle in History the Battle of Okinawa.

Iäm not saying one is more exciting that the other one. What Iäm saying that World war two was a complete World war and as such each theater has its uniquest and that is what makes it a exiciting War to my imagination. Its not just Hitler and the Germans as our enemies but Impirial Japan with its Asiatic component that make it truely a interesting episode in History as far as I see it.

When you put them together get a whamy of a interesting war!

Now I do not ever want to see the same thing happen again since in reality it was also a terrible war where untold suffering happen and no one who cares about other Human beigns would not like to see it happen again.God helps us!

Thank You BD;

Buka/Bonis - MR did Bonis in his original SI package but he dropped it when he did the GSL-SI Package, I don't remember why. I just added the Bonis BGL and BMP to the GSL-SI package and add destroyable objects through the MB.

Right now I'm concentrating on the PNG area. I've still got a bunch of stuff I'd like to do and I have a Campaign Project that's simmering in the pot. I just finished Tadji last night and it's off being tested right now. I'm about to go to work on Awar-Hansa North tonight and I'm waiting to hear back from MR about a couple of big locations. When I'm done with the PNG area I was thinking about doing some SI fields. My initial thought was to do some of the other fields around Kahili like Kara-Toripoil to start. MR has done most everything else other than going after the stock bases. With the exception of Henderson. I'll have to find out what he intends to do about Bonis. If he does not intend to go back there I'll add it to the list.

Thanks Xav;

I've got one more in Testing (Tadji), one in progress (Awar) and one I'm doing research on (Madang) for the next group. I've also got an update for the first package which will fix the problem in Free Flight of the T/O location/direction being 180* from the airbases.dat/Mission Builder location/direction. I've also figured out how to do an exclude to get rid of the stock Wewak strip. I just have to get with MR about Landclass to get rid of the big brown blobs. Then I'll be able to completely wipe out stock fields and have a clean slate to work with.

For the next Big Project I'm looking at both Hollandia and God help me, Port Moresby 3, 5, 7, 12, 14 and 17 mile dromes. Being able to Landclass over the stock PM field is a big part of this because it sits right in the way of 5 and 7 mile dromes. I may just start with the outer dromes and work my way in.
