CLS Piper Arrow for FREE.

Been There, Done That

I tried the CLS freebie, but I still prefer the old Arrow III by Warren Baier, available at flightsim.com
With some panel tweaks, it looks and flies great. It's the oldest plane I have, and on the lower end of the VC quality scale, but it's still great, at least for me. I think it looks better than the Arrow II with tapered wings and a longer fuselage. I mention it for your consideration. Perhaps you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Wow, talk about some coeenkidinks......just the other night I was on the hunt for a decent PA28. Found one that was okay...but I now have the freeware CLS and the Warren Baier models to check out. Really never gave much thought to this line of aircraft, but I was looking at the AI PA28-180 as it taxi'd by me and really like the shape of the plane.

I tried to download your beautiful skin for the CLS Piper...but I get a warning that your site is a reported attack site. Could you shoot me a copy of the skin via Skype or E-mail?

Since I earned my wings in a PA28-161 and my IFR rating in a PA28-181 I was part owner in the low wing 4 cylinder Piper trainers have had a solid spot in my hangars.
I could never get the CLS freeware plane to install on W7 despite downloading the file a couple of times and trying just about every trick I know to make installers work.

Fairly early on I stumbled upon Rien Cornellison ( think I got the last name right ) creations that covered the entire range. I did have to tweak the CFG a tiny bit to make sure the Archer flew exactly like the real 8DC so that I could do much of my IFR practice in the sim.

Between Carenado on FSD I have my current Saratoga covered nicely in FS as well....so I guess it's easy to see I like that shape as well

Cheers

It took a bit to get the CLS installed on my Win7 system...but it had nothing to do with Win7. I simply did not have all the accounts set up that I needed to in order to install the package. You have to have an account at CLS, one with FSshop or whatever it is they use for security, and to have the password that they send you via e-mail. Once I had that, I was able to install the CLS Piper PA28 without a hitch. Some jumps and hurdles, but well worth the effort as the plane is really nice. The pilot and passengers look like lo-res terrorists in training LOL, but the VC is really nice. Some tweaks to the flight dynamics to get the bird flying right, the improved prop blur someone posted, and the PA28 may very well find a permanent spot in my main FS9 install.

I am working up a sound pack for the PA-28, based on my modified C-172 sound pack, pulled in the Mooney Bravo gear sounds. The flaps on the PA-28 were manually extended/retracted via a Johnson Bar..a lever with a locking mechanism on it.....think about the parking brake lever in your car. I am looking for a good sound file to use for the flaps.....something with a click at the beginning, a squeaky sound in the middle, and a click at the end...this would simulate the pressing in of the lock button, the pull on the bar and the release of the lock button. I may take my digital camera over to my mom-in-law's and hop into her VW Bug and record the sound of her parking brake lever a few times.

Some observations I have made about the CLS Piper PA-28.

The stock gauges seem to be reading wrong. The airspeed indicator will show 120 knots but the Shift Z info will show 97 kias. I swapped in the airspeed gauge from the stock C-172 on the VC panel and it shows the same speed as the Shift Z info, while the stock gauge on the 2D panel shows 120. Also swapped in the Manifold Pressure/Fuel Flow gauge from the C-182 on the VC...it shows a fuel flow of around 12 GPH while the stock gauge on the lower panel pop up shows a fuel flow of over 7000 GPH. I will work up a new panel config using stock C-172 and C-182 gauges and will share it. The gauges are crisper, easier to read, better looking, and are showing more correct info than the stock gauges.

I am working on the roll rate issue. I have the MOIs recalcuated using ACM, and have adjusted the airelon effectiveness and roll stability in the config files. Better, but still rolls like a fat man in a water bed....which ain't fast at all. Will go into the air file and tweak the roll rate setting there....and that is were I will most likely run into trouble....always do! But I will do what I can to get this sweet little plane flying better.

I have the panel regauged with stock C-172 and C-182 gauges. The attached file (panel.cfg.txt) is for the black panel but can be used with all the panels...you will just have to change the name of the panel image in the main window part of the file.

All gauges now show the right speeds, fuel flow rates and such. And they look better.

Just download the file to your system, rename it to remove the .txt from the end (hit okay when it gives you that warning about changing the extension and the file not working Yada Yada nonsense).

This thread's a bit long in the tooth, and the attachment's probably been auto-pruned. It may help to PM Mike (Flyboy208) to see if he still has the textures.
