COLD WAR CFS2

I have been contemplating setting up a Cold(Hot) War section for CFS2 on my setup. I was planning to do this on a thumbdrive to which I have already copied over the stock CFS2.
Several questions come to mind .
1. Has anyone done this and does it work?
2. In changing the;
a) ships; is it safe to delete all and re-add new ones such as the Angle Midway, Stennis, Sumner/Gearing class destroyers and some Ruskie ships.
B) Textures will be the same
c) objectsdp what is safe to delete?
d) any other ideas or problems/pitfalls others have encountered that I can hopefully avoid.

I realize there will be a lot of mod/deletes/additions but would like to set something up. Any suggestions appreciated.

Fibber, use this guide...only apply it to things NOT intended for use:

1 - remove all stock aircraft folders from the AIRCRAFT directory
2 - remove all stock ships from the SHIPS directory
3 - remove all stock aircraft, ships and weapons from the mdlnames.txt file
4 - remove all stock aircraft from the qc_plane.qcb file located in the QUICKCOM directory
5 - remove the entries of all stock ships and aircraft from the DESCRIP.DAT file located in the INFO directory
6 - in the OBJECTS_DP directory, delete the dp's all stock weapons not intended for use
7 - DONE!

***************************************************************************************

Any new aircraft should be added to the qc_plane file for QC action
Any new ships should be added to the descript.dat and CALLSIGN.DAT files (be sure to follow format of old stock entries)
Any new weapons should be added to the mdlnames.txt file

I'm curious, Fibber. What type of missions are you contemplating, given the limitations of the CFS2 game engine? I love all the FoxFour stuff; I suppose that could be considered Cold War.

thanks for the replies

Bearcat; I completely forgot about Descript.dat That is what has been driving me nuts! Thanks, I did just about all the others so far and it seems to work.

Euro; I was thinking mainly along the lines of adapting the QC file for A 2 A and also retuning things like the training missions to reflect new planes and ships. Could even use TR's KW theater, if he doesn't object, to reflect newer ships and planes. I plan this for my own use but ,if successful, will share the info.

Maybe even some of the Mideast missions could be adapted to reflect the same. Heck history seems to be protraying itself out in the same places. Different equipment, some different players but same problems.

Hi Fibber,

You were reading my mind! Although for missions, I was looking mainly at air strikes, escort, and cap type missions. I've been digging around trying to find suitable planes that, 1. don't look too fs98ish, and 2. are fairly easy on framerates.

I was also looking into a 6 Day War and Yom Kippur War, as I understand that Israeli doctorine promoted dogfighting with guns (per History Channel's "Dogfights") I found a Mirage IIIC in IAF markings at Flightsim that converted nicely, just a little heavy on fpf's, but am unable to locate a MiG-21 in Egyptian markings nor an EAF skin for the AlphaOldies MiG-21.

The now-freeware Iris a/c convert to CFS2 but some of the control surfaces are "jacked" and the Razbam a/c definitely are ready to use.

Dean Reimer has an F/A-18C for FS2k2 that converts nicely and Chris Coarse did a dp file using stock weps, but this one's very heavy on fpm's.

Kind regards,

TW

Korea-Middle East-Cold War

Fibber,

While I don't have it running now, I generally keep a Korea-Middle East-Cold War CFS 2 installation on my computer. Bearcat's advice is spot on. There are several interacting files in CFS 2 and they all need to be modified to preclude mis-communication within the sim.

If you guys can find an old copy of Flight1's "Mig v. Sabre" it will jump start your project. It came with a very good Mig 15 and F-86 as well as numerous AI aircraft for the Korean War.

The Fox 4 campaigns and aircraft will also give you a head start to the Cold War and Korea.

Collin's Ship Yard has several post WW II versions of ships available too.

Here's a few of my 50s to 60s adventures.

Hi Jagd,
Have the Sabre v. MiG on a separate install of CFS2. Have Kirk Olsson's F-86, JK's F-84G, AH F9F Panther, and David Hanvey's Sea Fury. Still have to add Razbam's Banshee and Korean era Skyraider, just to name a few. Like you said, this is a good starting point.

I'm using Alpha Bleu Ciel's F8F bearcat but can anyone recommend a good F4U4 Corsair?

By the way, I understand Milton Shupe and his team here at the Outhouse are working on an F7F Tigercat for FS9, of which they've released a beta version.

Kind regards,

TW

I've got a "Middle Eastern conflicts since 1945", and a "World War III - 1972" install on my external H/D. I did a load of IAF and Arabic skins for various aircraft, as well as some RAF skins as a personal thing, but I've been sharing this stuff with take53084. He's also very interested in the Arab-Israeli conflicts. The skins that I did are very basic, and not anything that I would want to upload. If anyone's interested, then PM me, and I'll give you the links to the files at box.net.

Cheers,

Corsairs

Guy Hulin's Corsair was updated to the Korean War AU-1 Corsair by A.F. Scrub some time ago.

My personal favourite Corsair is the Donationware FDG2 Corsair - there was a FS9 and a dedicated CFS2 version. Morton did a number of post-wwii paints for it, and if you are familiar with any of his work, they are absolutely fantastic. He has some great Korean war era paints, a very late Marine paint (early 60's), and a Suez Aeronavale paint.

Now, for some ideas ....

To the point of a cold war campaign, Suez makes an interesting conflict- some jets, some reciprocating engine planes, all bombs/bullets/rockets type munitions, and a good cross section of planes available. Back to Morton, he did some fantastic P-80 and F-84 paints, so you have the basis for either a historic Suez campaign, or a "Suez gone bad" - where instead of mediating, the US actually gets involved due to Soviet bad faith and underhandedly supplying the Egyptian/Arab side. A nice repaint of the Alphasim CFS2 P-47 in French Air Force colours (as in, Algeria) could give you another angle. Razbam's CFS2 planes (now freeware) like the A-1 and Banshee could take an interesting perspective. Drag it forward a few years, and you could tie in Marc Cygan's Crusaders ....

RAF-wise, the CFS Hunter and Vampire models are a bit long in the tooth, but who knows ... maybe there's other more recent stuff out there.

I think the idea is brilliant Fibber - would be a great new chapter to follow on the FoxFour Korea campaign. I know the Strike Fighters Suez Cana mod was the reason I bought that particular sim, and it was a real treat. To see it in CFS2 would be divine.

TW, IAF

I am still hunting around for some participant aircraft and over at Simviation/modern jets/ 2000 I found some Egytian marked planes and several IAF planes. Notably a phontom and some Mirages. Also interesting to note that in some of the earlier wars there were spitfires and mustangs involved. But that will take a little more looking to verify.

Hi Fibber,
I found an Alphasim MiG-19 Farmer in Egyptian markings on my external HD. A MiG-17 and MiG-21 would be in order I think.

Jagd,
Thank you for the recommendation on the late model Corsair, I will check into it.

Pombee,
Thanks for the offer on the skins!

Delta_Lima,
The Suez Canal idea is pretty awesome! That's a conflict I don't anything about but a great reason to do some research.

I was also wondering how a Cuban Missle Crisis or a present day Korean War Campaign would play out in the CFS2 enviroment?

Kind regards,

TW

TEXTURES

Just thought that I would let you know that there are several textures available in our own little library for the participants in the 1967 round of the M.E. war. They are done by Old Wheat and are for the freeware Alphasim planes. Egyptian Mig 17-19-21s and the Mirages in Isreali motif

Side question to show my naive side. Will FS98 scenery work in this game engine? Found a lot of ME airports. Though I don't think they would be up for a airstrike, maybe takeoff points.

Mideast Conflict

TW, Fib, Jagd, Pombee might be the man to contact for Mideast Conflict information. I am all for getting into the '48, '56, '67, '73, and 82 Lebanese Incursion, and for reasons I don't understand, the Mideast Conflicts have been sadly neglected in CFS2:salute:

This is encouraging ...

Yes, I forgot about '48. Mostly WWII planes, easy to use bombs/bullets/rockets munitions. I'm not sure how well CFS2 does guided missiles (AAM or SAM), I'm a bit sceptical of how realistic the 67 and later missions would be in this sim (at least compared to SFP1). But 48 and 56 would be very interesting.

I also realized that the superb work FS Shipyards has done with their Ocean, Glory, and Essex carriers - there is excellent naval dimensions to these campaigns (chiefly Suez).

This is starting to be very interesting ... :)
