Cold War combat in CFS2

I'm likely showing just how much of a CFS2 newb I am ... apologies if this has been asked before,

Seeing Mort's recent (and his and other artists') jet era mods, I want to know how/where do folks use them? With either stock or addon campaigns installed, how do you fly a jet strike mision in the Viet Nam era, or a A2A mission using Cold War interceptors? I know of no campaigns to do this, and I've never been able to "set up" a combat scenario within a stock campaign to use something other than the stock planes.

Dumb, I know - but up to now, I've never done anything outside of the WWII and Korean War Fox mods ... I'm hoping there's a whole new world of CFS2 opportunities just around the corner that I've never know about ...

CFS2 lacks the capability to use any type of guided missile so Vietnam air warfare with a full array of threats is not possible. An AIM-9 Sidewinder will just blast off the rail and go straight, if it happens to hit your intended victim fine but the missile won't lock onto a fleeing MiG-17 and fly up his tailpipe. Same-same with SA-2 SAM's. 2-3 years ago somebody came up with working SA-2 launchers but the missiles just launch in your general direction with no guidance.
If you can do without the SAM threat you can still build some pretty hair-raising Vietnam missions. During my misspent youth I read out a lot of photo missions around some well-defended places in North Vietnam and I can assure you for the aircrews going in on strikes the SAM's were often the least of their worries. Missions to the Thanh Hoa area for example. The infamous RR/highway bridge, the main RR yard, various transshipment points and oil storage - the whole area was heavily defended by 23/37/57mm AAA guns and a lot of them. Occasionally MiG's would venture south from fields further north but in CFS2 those engagements will be strictly gun fights.
 
OK - I get the whole unguided ordanance thing, and I'm quite familiar with the general scope of Vietnam era flying - no problem there ....

My question is more one of how - I've never run across campaigns, or even missions available for basic post Korean war combat. I'm thinking of elements such as the AAA, Zuni rockets, bombs, etc. in conjunction with these aircraft. There were dozens of Alphasim CFS2 jets and other Cold War aircraft - how did you folks use these planes, within the aforementioned weapons confines?

One way I did it was a little labor intensive to set up but it worked pretty well. I took the Fox Four missions and substitued the modern jets into the missions and then flew them. Took a bit to set up but it did work. Just had to put up with missions in Korea.
Never toyed with some of the Southern zones and unable to vouch that if you took the WW2 missions and subed everything it will work. Take into consideration any authors before you go public with them. I only did it for myself. Sadly I lost the thumbdrive I had it all on!
Also toyed with a Mid-East section as there are some good meshes and textures available and I did find, after a lot of hunting, some mid-east airfields that would work well. There are some Isreali and Arab dressed jets floating around the net.

I do believe that there was some talk of Viet era missions floating around but don't know if it came to fruitation.

BTW a good read on missions in Hanoi area is " Going Downtown" and Thud Ridge". It involves the Thunderchiefs and strikes in the Red River area.

First, you use them in head to head A2A fights in QC over any chosen location. That's how you get the feel for how they - and you - will perform in a designed mission against a designated modern era counterpart. Obviously, gunfighting in jets is not as easy as the WWII prop-v-prop fights.

As for using them in strike roles, although you can "sub" them into existing Korean campaigns and such to test them out (WWII subs NOT recommended), you should learn to set up your own typical missions of this type in MB. Cody Coyote's MB manual can help you get back in the saddle there.

Bearcat, that really helped explain what I was trying to figure out. Fibber - thanks for your points too. What I was really hoping to do was the recreation of a Suez-era Middle East scenario, but it sounds like a better start if I look at doing something on the Korean Peninsula.

I guess Morton's cfs2 conversion utility will get some good use in all this ... :)
