Hi folks;
New guy here. Enjoying the potential of this sim but having great deal of problems. The OFF folks are really trying hard with excellent tech support to get me up and running. Figured I would post here as well in case anyone else has ideas.

My system is pretty high end. Dual Core 8400 Intell 3GGhz with 2 gigs ram and a pair of SLI NVIDA 7800GT cards. All defragged hard drives. Per OFF folks, I have followed all the graphics suggestions.

PROBLEM. I can't play for longer than a minute or so before the graphics lock up causing me to hard boot the computer..Control Alt Delete won't even work. Happens immediately when I hit the F5 Gauges key which look squished on top of one another. Otherwise, I crash after changing views etc. Like I said I have graphics turned down and that helped a little but in the end, I lock up at some point.

I am at 1024x768 millions of colors, most texture and graphics set to 2 or 1.I am patched to all the current versions of both CFS3 and OFF. Shouldn't I be able to play at full resolution and setting with my system. I used to run CFS3 that way? Thanks for any help you can lend..Great sim once I get using it properly. Two other friends waiting for my report to order as well. I guess I am the guinea pig to test first..hahahha. thanks folks.

up to date drivers.

Yes, all up to date and even more graphic intensive sims are running fine. Like Frontline, COD5, DCS Black Shark, the works..no crashes.

Do you have patched CFS3 to 3.1 or even 3.1a? This is only to be done, when using the old cd`s. If you bought the value pack on DVD, then you don`t need to.

Regards

Steve, do the steps in the email first, and set your screen resolution to the max your monitor allows in CFS3config. Best to do 1 step at a time remember.
OFF is definitely not CFS3 in terms of graphics. It's MUCH higher resolution textures, many more aircraft in the air with their high res textures. Sliders in OFF are not the same as CFS3 either

slider 5 in CFS3 = 3 in OFF.

Heat issues?

Is your case, fans and card clean of dust and dust bunnies?

Thankfully, you are one of the very few having problems. Most here are up and running with easy installs and on systems much less robust then yours.
I would say you have a problem somewhere that you have just over looked. You can start by reading through the sticky above, "Having Problems? and if that doesn't help, read through the FAQs on the OFF site. Still having problems, please come back.

defo check your temp. i was havin fps problems with OFF and it wasnt until i checked my cpu temp i found out my pc was throttling back and causing probs

Have you tried disabling SLI and running with just one GPU? And are you running Vista or XP and which version..

troubleshooting

You folks cannot believe the help I received from Powlovski today. We sent many many emails back and forth. Great person. I refuse to give up on this because when I was able to play for a bit this evening, it was awesome! I was able to do a mission, shoot down my adversary, and head for home. On return, I was switching views and I hit cockpit and bang...Lockup again. I did find my C drive was very fragmented. Probably from the installs and at least 12 lockups. OFF folder is installed on the D drive. Some things I have tried and I really appreciate all your tips and advice..You folks sound like a nice community here.

Have settings currently at: 1280x1024, millions of colors
All sliders at number 2 except for clouds at number 1
Tried SLI on and Off, same results
All temps are inline and normal
Relatively new computer in clean environment, no dust.
XP Service pack 3

Isn't there a feature in XP that when there is a crash, one can look up the log history and see what the cause was? I don't know where that was although I am fairly certain it is a graphic related problem. Please note, I can play for hours in all my other sims with no crash, and I will try again, but plain old vanilla CFS3 seems ok unless I find otherwise. Maybe it was the fragmentation? Will report more tomorrow. Thanks for the help everyone and especially the OFF team members behind the scenes.

All patched up to date in CFS3 and OFF

Were it me I'd be physically remove one graphics card vs disabling SLI and see what happens. That and reverting back to XP SP2 if that's an option as well.

And yes, you can check Event Viewer via Control Panel | Adminstrative Tools

Go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management. Under system tools you'll find a feature called "Event Viewer". Take a look at both the "system" and "application" events. There may be a clue there as to what's goin' on.

Cheers,

Parky

Something else you can try as well. Click on "Start". Click on "Run" and in the window that pops up, type in "msconfig" without the quotation marks....then click on "Ok". That will bring you to the System Configuration Utility. Click on the "Startup" tab, and down in the bottom right, click on "Disable All". Then hit "Apply" and "Ok" That'll shut down all that mostly unnecessary stuff that runs by default when you boot your machine. You'll have to reboot for those changes to take effect......and you should get a message that reminds you of that.

Reboot......start the game up and take it for a spin. If it still crashes, you can go back in and re-enable all that stuff in the Sytem Config Utility, 'cause that ain't what's causing your problems. If the game runs smoothly with no lockups or crashes, it's a matter of figuring out which one of those startup apps is causing the conflict, and just disabling the one that's causing you grief. You can re-enable any that aren't if you so desire.

Just a note of warning. When you shut down all those startup apps, it'll probably kill any third party firewalls or antivirus proggies you're running and possibly some other useful utilities. It won't however, kill any real necessary system functions. It's up to you to figure out which apps should be running and which ones shouldn't.

It's worth a try just to see if something in that startup configuration is causing a conflict. You have to start somewhere.

Hope you get it sorted....and by the way, welcome to the forum.

Cheers,

Parky

DXDIAG info (abbreviated)

Geez, all good tips and BTW, I read everything on the FAQ as well. Thanks for the welcome. Here is the result of the DXDiag, deleted all the other stuff, just kept the abbreviated graphics stuff..Unfortunately a fresh defrag did not help. Played for awhile and after about 5 minutes of play it locked.

Oh and BTW, I just found a newer nVidia driver....from January of this year. I downloaded it but really need to get some sleep before I get into this deeply again...Tomorrow is another day. Will report here. Night all.

A couple of observations...

For an XP/SP3 system, your physical memory usage is VERY high. It's more than three times greater than that used by the XP system that I'm writing this message on. That suggests that you've got something pretty major running in the background, but I don't know what it might be. Here's a guide as to how to shut down non-gaming programs that are appropriating the memory:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;331796

Second, it appears that your monitor's max resolution is 1600x1200. You've got the horsepower to run it that high, and that's exactly what I do, if I were you. You also need to check for updated display drivers.

Finally, your cut and paste doesn't include the sound adapter info, which is always a source of concern when trying to troubleshoot these problems. For that matter, your post is a little thin on system specs, and it'd really help if we knew more about your gear.

BTW, thanks for your patience.

more information on lockups

Hi All. Tonight I ran a new nVida driver and was able to fly/die for about 10 minutes, then locked up. This was the application even log abbreviated of course. Wow, it was great while flying though. I have to get this to work.

My system is XP sp3
E8400 Dual Intel, 3.0GHz
2GB Ram
Dual evga nVidia GeForce 7800GT running SLI
Audigy2 ZS Soundcard
19 inch CRT Viewsonic monitor able to run 1600x1200 only at 60hertz though, little tough on eyes at that refresh.
Most time I run 1280x1024 at 75 hertz

My Audigy driver appears older and I will now go look for a newer one of those to install. First though, I am going to try running with nothing running in background as suggested here.

Thanks all for enduring through all this. :faint:

To me its either a Ram issue - if you have two dimms take one out and try one at a time or a GPU mem issue - harder to test.
