Conspicuous by Their Absence

Hi Smilo,

You could always do this in AF99. Depending on the level of detail you are intending, I don't think it would be all that difficult to do the Arado 196. That plane has a lot of curves which might get expensive.

BTW, About an hour and a half ago (around 11 PM local time), my daily driver car (Mazda 626) was smashed up pretty badly while sitting in front of my house. Hit and Run. We figure someone was heading up the street and tapped a Minivan on the LEFT side of the streed, overcorrected and made a really solid hit on the left rear corner of my car. Impact put the two passenger side wheels up on the curb. Car is not driveable at this point.

Just hate it whennat happens!

last night when i shut down ad2k,
a small window popped up in french.
i don't understand french.
i restarted the program, just to see what
and everything is gone!
i even made sure to save before i shut it down.
crap and drat!
i wonder what happened.
the only saving grace is that
the coordinates are marked on the drawings
and i wrote them down in a notebook.
now i am extra nervous and will have to start
a special backup system.
it's always somethin'

If you need a translation, I know someone who could help...:kilroy:

BTW- I'm not sure that you are really using AD2000. You told me once that it was using z-buffering. Well... only AD2002 does...

If I'm not mistaken, Ivan's right; this is the Arado Ar 196. The Graf Spee had one.

Darn. I was hoping to be a bit more subtle than that. In a few minutes I get to see how the car looks in all its pieces in the daylight. Gray, Overcast and Raining. Kind of fits the mood.

- Ivan.

first and foremost,
sorry to hear about your car.
what a drag...life in the city.
of course, we get our weirdness
out here in the boonies, too.

ar196 it is, asper a suggestion by No Dice.

yes, i'm sure it could be done in af99,
but this project is mainly the subject
for my ad2k learning process.
which, btw, will hopefully enable me
to build more detailed multi's.
...my long term goal.

i am positive i am using ad2k.
i have double, triple and even quad checked.
when i compile, i am given the option
of building in fs98/cfs or fs2000.
if i am not mistaken,
the z buffering process began with fs2000,
hence, the compiling option.
the program also comes with tutorials
for both fs98/cfs and fs2000
and also explains the difference.

so, that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

oh yeah, who do you suppose
the first person i thought of was
when the window popped up in french?
silly me, i should have taken a screen shot.
live and learn...maybe next time.

Hi Smilo,

Just out of curiosity, why did you pick the Arado 196 floatplane to work on? It certainly isn't the simplest project around.

- Ivan.

i got the spark from your post #293
where you posted No Dice's list.
as you know i'm crazy for twins,
my second faves are float planes.

the area where i live is perfect for them.
lots of water and islands with little coves,
no to mention, lakes all over the place.
i have a friend that has a champ w/floats.
she's very basic, but very, very cool.

besides, i like the look of the ar196
and there's only one example out there.
i can see a few places where
i may have problems, but what the hey?
maybe, i'll learn something.

i really hope i can finish it.

I am still having loads of fun with the Ju 87B as you can tell. Some of these shapes are tough to figure out even with photographs.

Perhaps a new thread about the Arado would be a good idea?

- Ivan.

We'll see where the Stuka goes. Doesn't look too hard to finish at the moment. The point I was getting at is that the tail section is beating the heck out of me. This is probably about the fourth try I have had there and still things don't look right.

I was more curious about the Arado floatplane though. Perhaps it should be a demo of a AD2000 build?

- Ivan.

don't know about the ar196
as a ad2k build demo.
there is a lot of pain at the moment.

i am on pin and needles!!!
for some reason, the program
likes to wipe out all my work,
including the backups i put in a separate folder.
now, how the hell does that work?
it's done it a couple, three times, already.

i have taken to making a backup,
then moving it to a separate computer.
what a pain the kiester!
the program hasn't crashed since
i've started this new method,
so i don't know if it will work.
we shall see.

just for grins, i'll start an ar196 thread.

Hi Smilo,

I am hoping the Ar 196 Thread will be added incentive to complete the aeroplane. Y'know, I believe the National Air and Space Museum has an Arado 196 that was taken off the Prinz Eugen before it was sent to Bikini. What a sad end for a lovely ship.

BTW, For those who don't already know, Test Able was sposta put a nuke right over the Nagato which was the surviving flagship from the Pearl Harbor attack as a symbolic gesture. Problem was that it was a couple hundred yards off target and Nagato suffered only minimal damage.....

So much for symbolic gestures.

- Ivan.

as we are all to well aware,
just because a project is mentioned,
or even has it's own thread,
it does not,
by any stretch of the imagination,
mean it will be completed.
sad, but true.

i would go so far as to say,
...ah, heck, i don't even want to go there.
it's such a waste of time and energy.
let's just muddle along
and see what happens.
hopefully, the ar196 thread
will not be just another symbolic gesture.

Hi Smilo,

I guess *I* would definitely have to agree with you. I start zillions of projects. I guess it is because 3D Design is fun and things like texturing, flight models and testing are just tedious.

- Ivan.

Hi No Dice,

Do you remember the Stuka AFX that you, Smilo and I were looking at a while back? The main fault of that AFX was that it was not textured. If you want, I can clean up that plane a bit and you test out what you can do with it. I can tell you that it is fairly labour intensive and probably not what you are thinking. My version of the Stuka is MUCH harder because it has a lot more pieces.

- Ivan.

Quite Frankly,
I would rather do your 205! But right now I just finished Sicily, Malta and Pantelleria for Corsica and Italy 1941
release this weekend and I am working on a panel for Smilo's Ar196...so I need a few weeks to catch up.

Dave :salute:

Hi Smilo,

Perhaps this message should be a PM, but have you thought about translating FSDS projects to AD2000? The biggest issue with FSDS stuff besides resource count for AF99 is that they don't do Viewing Planes, but since you need to put those in anyway, it would not be a great loss to convert to AD2000.

BTW, do you need some reference dimensional drawings? I found a few, but the quality is really poor. Almost readable. I also found some fairly good images in a Russian book about the Arado 196.

- Ivan.

FSDS FS2000

http://www.freeflightdesign.org/military/sbdsrc.zip

The above is a good example of a plane that probably started off life as a FS98 plane. I bet it could be rebuilt into a AF99 or AD2000 project without a whole lot of effort. I may do that anyway as a test even though I built what I believe to be a much better SBD model a few years back.
