Curtiss C-46 Beta Test Available

Looking forward to the new version. Merc Air's Flight 19 is working on a online cargo flying event that the C-46 will be a natural fit for.

Thanks for the heads up on this package...I just about fell out of my chair the other day when I realized that I did not have the C-46 installed. Have no idea why.

Tim ... it's his that I've been flying around in ... it's a real beauty ... just puts the old DC-3 to shame, it's soooo pretty ... and soooo BIG!

I've been flying this C-46 since it came out and I've enjoyed many hours of flying time. I don't think there's anything that isn't perfect.

I flew around in the beta yesterday for quite awhile and have to say, I really cannot find fault....mid

Thanks Tom; I've been thinking about reinstalling the Commando as it features in an advertising campaign for jeans over here, so this comes at a perfect time! :salute:

Looking great Tom :jump: Thanks for all the efforts to keep this gem alive.

Maybe just a personal preference but in the panel.cfg Views section, I prefer this statement to not raise the view so much:

[VIEWS]
VIEW_FORWARD_ZOOM=1.000
VIEW_FORWARD_EYE=0.000, 0.000, 0.000
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=9.000, 0.000, 0.000

Flying this aircraft level,changing the 9.000 to 4.000 seems like a better forward view in both the VC and 2D panel screens.

[VIEWS]
VIEW_FORWARD_ZOOM=1.000
VIEW_FORWARD_EYE=0.000, 0.000, 0.000
VIEW_FORWARD_DIR=4.000, 0.000, 0.000

I'll continue testing looking forward to enjoying this a lot. :)

Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words. :)

Hi Milton,

That number (in FS9) is based on seeing the horizon in the correct place in level flight.

BTW, if you import the plane into FSX, it's better to lower the zoom value (by 75%) than lowering the View_Dir value. Gives you better proportions, especially using a widescreen monitor. I'm using 0.75 zoom with a 16:9 monitor in FS9; it should be about 75% of that in FSX (0.6 or so).

Hope this helps,

I enjoyed the original Whale, but the updated Beta 2 version seems to be spot on. Lots of animation in the various doors and the flight model sure feels like a heavy twin engine transport. Faster than a C-47, but it takes a bit more runway too. I'll fly her again in a bit with a planned flight from Boise, Idaho north over the Sawtooths to Bonners Ferry.

Back in the day, I used to see Commandos on the ramp at Tan San Nhut airfield whenever I transited through there. They didn't have any insignia on them, but everyone knew who they belonged to and the base version of the plane in the package resembles them closely. With lots of clandestine service throughout Asia in the 50s up through 1975, she should provide great canvas for some interesting paint jobs. This is a great stable mate to the recently released C-47 Gooney Bird by Manfred. A fellow can do lots of flying worldwide with just these two workhorses.

I think that I'll paint a red stripe into the bars on the national insignia in the USAAF textures and make her a USAF bird so that she fits in better with my 1950s-1960s FS 9 theme.

I'm not registered over at Cal Classics...so I'll post this here in the hope that Tom sees it.

I just had the C-46 up for a check ride and found that, using the throttle quadrant, I was not able to adjust the pitch on the right side (Number 2) engine. Left (Number 1) I could pull it all the way back to a fully feathered pitch. Right side...nada....not even one bit of adjustment could be made using the throttle quadrant pop up. Could not even grab the lever at all.

The VC panel looks MUCH better...that was the only thing "wrong" with the original C-46.

One other thing....the props don't seem to spin...they are, but the yellow tips areas stay in a small area of the prop circle. Maybe add the following line to each entry in the config files:

prop_anim_ratio=1.25

Or maybe not...not a big deal for a guy like me who flies from inside the plane 95% of the time.

Obio,

I'm sure that you did, but did you try E + 1 & 2 to sycronize the engines and controls? I'm pretty big on asymetrical thrust during ground ops and aerial maneuvers and sometimes I get mixed up and don't get those darned engine controls working properly.

I'll look a little more closely at my props during tonights little joy ride.

Synchronize what? Huh? I just hit Control E, throw the throttles to the firewall and crash. That's the extent of my piloting skills.

"Synchronize what? Huh? I just hit Control E, throw the throttles to the firewall and crash. That's the extent of my piloting skills."

Ahhh, a pilot after my own heart.:salute: A good way to check if they are in synch is to charge off at full speed after starting up. If you go straight, they are in synch, if ya do a ground loop, they are not. Then the E+1+2+n thingy will come into play. 'course one can always reload the plane which will synch all the bits just fine, but it does take away from the realism a bit.:jump:

On another note, You seem to use the word "crash" a lot. Have you installed the massive crash effect so you can enjoy those intimate moments to the fullest?:ichile:

Downloading now, I'll keep the notes in mind Milton, tgibson, and OBIO. I shall change the zoom vuew to 0.75 in the panel.cfg anyhow, as I use a wide-screen monitor. Thanks for that tip tgibson.

I am afraid that is left for Panther alone. :icon_lol:

One thing I found...when using the ATC function, after requesting a gflight following and getting that squared away with squzwk and the like, if I happen to check the closest airports with the atc function, the text reverts back to asking if I want a flight following.....methinks there is perhaps something simple amiss.

Hi all,

Thanks for the comments.

I cannot replicate the problem with the prop pitch lever (I assume you mean in the VC?). Can you tell me which MDL file you were using when you had the problem? FS9 or FSX? Does anyone else see this?

I already have prop_anim entries in there - it's currently set at 0.9, which works well for me. But the prop animation will vary with the frame rate you are getting at the moment, so feel free to edit that to your taste.

BTW, I have just released Beta 3, which has improved "slow" prop appearance in the 4 bladed version (i.e. startup and shutdown), silver props on the Flying Tiger, Aerocondor, and Aeronorte liveries, and replaces the missing radio range gauge entries from Beta 2.

Thanks,

When I experienced the non-op status on the right prop lever, I was flying FS9, the Aerocondor scheme...which is in the GA C46 SA folder. I will give the plane another flight and try synching the props and see if that was the problem.

OBIO

Just a niggle, but all three have C-46 in the atc_model= field in the General section of the aircraft.cfg file. The ATC doesn't recognise that entry. If you change that to C46, the ATC will call it a Curtiss Commando.

I just get a little OCD about ATC function...

I'm still installing all my paints for it before I finish installing the new version. Hopefully flight tests will begin shortly.

Okay...I am a dolt! I found the problem with the prop pitch control. I actually had the original version of the C-46 still installed...forgot that I copied it over from my archive DVD the other day. The prop pitch problem was on the OLD version, the new version is fine. I dumped the original version...so all is good now! Carry on and try to forget that I am an idiot!
