Damage model (?)

I am new at OFF. Flew IL2 for years. I got my copy of OFF today and flew several quick battles. In one I was in a Sopwith and the enemy a DIII. It seems I put countless rounds into him before finally getting his wing blown off by flak.

Is this common in OFF? Seemingly bulletproof planes. Every time I hit him I got the message saying you hit German pilot so I know I was riddling him with bullets.

It was ridiculous actually.

You've got to remember, these planes are made predominately out of canvas and wood. Bullets go right through most parts of the planes without having much effect. Aim for "meat, or metal" (the pilot, or the engine). No offense, but maybe your marksmanship needs work.

First, get VERY close (less than 50 yards is often a good measure, though some people get closer). Fire in short bursts.

Aim for the following areas:

-cockpit
-engine
-area right in front of the cockpit but behind the engine

The pilot is the hardest to hit usually. Hitting the engine will damage his ability to power the plane and possibly drop him or knock his oil out.

The area between the pilot and the engine usually houses a large fuel tank. Putting leaks into it is actually the easiest way to down a plane-- the gas tank is a large target. The engine will run out of gas and die.

On liquid-cooled engines go for the radiator as well-- it'll cause the engine to overheat.

Never having played CFS3, let alone OFF, I have a question......

How does the game model bullets? Do they actually penetrate until they hit something solid, or do they (as in most flightsims) just go splat on the 1st surface they encounter?

RB3D had the latter method, which IMHO was pretty inappropriate for WW1. You could get directly behind an enemy and shoot down the length of his fuselage, but all you'd hurt was his tail surfaces. They and the rear part of the fuselage absolutely stopped all bullets near the tail of the of the plane.

In real life, or course, there was nothing between the pilot's back and your guns except a piece of canvas and a wicker seat, so shots like this would have to hit the pilot. But no, in RB3D, to hit the pilot, you had to actually get a headshot on the part of him that was exposed above the top of the fuselage.

So how is this handled in CFS3/OFF?

No hit boxes don't allow pass through as fas as I know but the DM has been very carefully designed to allow you to hit critical areas you should be able to from behind, and each craft is different.

Lav - do as they guys say, this isn't WW2, there are no huge wing fuel tanks or ammo (one or two have a small tank on top wing say). You guns are old Vickers/Spandau guns with Rate of fire slowed considerably to allow firing through old prop sync gear, they are inaccurate and no where near the punch of a WW2 fighter.
Get close, aim for pilot/engine, job done.

Also there's a setting for Weapon Strength in WORKSHOP

Normal - Default WWI MG

Stronger - WWII MG

Strongest - ARCADE

Not Offical, but that's how I see it :kilroy:

And when they say close, they mean rock throwing distance. Keep those bursts short, 10 shots or less.
Remember: in a P51 you had 6X .50 cal's, what you hit, you destroyed, now you have 1 or 2 .30 cal

Correct me If I am mistaken, I think even ManfredvRicht. reported a victory over an allied machine at which he shot something insane like 800 rounds into before it dropped.

OK, thanks. I figured it would be this way and I'm sure you all tweaked it to be as true to WW1 as possible. I seem to recall having this same discussion with you years ago over on Delphi about FCJ's damage model, BTW. Or am I mistaking you for somebody else?

I recall from posts made long ago by Winder, or maybe someone else on the OFF team, that the recommended setting is actually 'strongest'.

My memory isn't what it used to be, so if I am wrong someone please chime in.

No this is not correct for P3.

Normal = default, that is the recommended and how the DM is designed.

(We forced it to strongest in previous versions and then adjusted the craft to suit but that is no longer the case).

Bullethead yes very likely. P3 has more complex hit boxes and you can hit critical parts including pilots from behind but several crossmembers/wires etc are in the way from directly behind so not all would "pass through" but you do still have a chance to hit. I could give more clues hints but really best if people play and work out the best tactics - more fun that way than someone spelling out all the critical areas to hit and spoil the fun ;)

Very few gunsights exist now or then, best way to see WHERE your hitting, when you're looking to hit somplace else. Throw a burst into the base of a tree. Then it was mostly snap shooting, it happens too damned fast for an aimed shot anyhow.

Pay no attention to those WWII Birds 'Walking the bullets into the target'.

You got just enough for that gun, and you can't land and get more

Besides: Long Bursts equals heat, which is the top cause of jams :ernae:
