DARPA Takes a Crack at the Flying Car


Despite the fact DARPA is doing this (which of course means it is very serious) I think it's a sizeable leap in faith to ask humans to climb in to an aerospace vehicle sans a human operator at the controls.

Yes, pilot error sometimes happens. But the truth is that vastly more often human intervention overcomes system malfunctions with a normal safe landing. The reason the public gets a warped impression is that 99 times out of 100, the human overcomes the malfunction safely and nothing is ever published about it.

It is the rare times when the crash happens that everyone finds out it happened at all!
