Dash 8-100 released by VirtualCol - Marketplace Only

Beginning to think the propellers are stuck in fine pitch. Would that explain the low cruise speed ? Producing more drag than thrust.
What do you think ?

Only the Dash 8 appealed to me, I also wish it had been another company, but for casual local flights, it will suffice at the price. BUT for goodness sakes where are the other developers for this aircraft?
Hey Ken, how are you doing, mate ? Good to see you still enjoy virtually flying. Me too ! We've come a long way, didn't we ! ;-)

So what about the ATR42/72 then ?.... Just about the very same aircraft as the Dash. Very nice model by Asobo itself. I bet quite a few times better than the VirtualCol model ( believe me i know what i'm talking about, true, longtime ago, forgat what models they were. Payware, sure and that's what it's all about over at the VC bureaux if you ask me. Quick modelling to make a quick bug...ehhhhh... buck..;-)

The cockpit shot you posted is what got my attention. It's not only the external appearance of the Dash 8, similar to some extend to the ATR, it's also the cockpit looking very similar to that of the earlier editions of the ATR. Even got the same engines too... Maybe you remember we did the ATR model as well, right ? And i was particularly enchanted by the extremely lovely panel that Rob Howard did for the ATR. Also one of the reasons i fell in love with the ATR (although i actually never had much interest in it before...). You can imagine i was over the moon when Asobo released their ATR for MSFS2020/2024. As soon as i entered the VC for the first time i couldn't have been more dissapointed..... Gone.... that extremely nice looking dashboard that Rob had so meticulously recreated for our early ATR edition. Now replaced by 4 extremely boring iPad style monitors..... That's it...

But hey, it's almost back with this Dash 8 ! ( Ok, not in the soothing yellowish/brown color of the early ATR series) So, i was wondering, is it because of the VC that you went for the VC (errmm...VirtualCol) Dash 8 and NOT the Asobo ATR ?.... (was just wondering... ;-)

Jan, you have become a mind reader..

I am not a fan of glass cockpits. I prefer the original ATR (as we had done in VIP those decades ago), and thus have never purchased the Asobo one, even at its low price. And yes, the analogue panel of the early Dash 8 models captivates me in a way that the later Q-400 never will.

Recently, I got into Virtual Reality for the first time. WOW, blown away! And for all its faults, I could happily sit in the VC of the Virtualcol Dash 8, even on the ground, with rain coming down, and just soak in the elegance and atmosphere of that traditional stream cockpit.

I even still fly the analogue Cessna 172 ten times more than the G1000 version.

I really hope Virtualcol fix the poor flight dynamics. Pity the marketplace does not offer the aircraft.cfg as I know somebody would have had a go at it by now. So, we wait, and hope.

And yes, I am doing fine Jan. I do wish I could have found a way back into the FS world as a business again, but... That looks unlikely.

All the best my friend.

- Kenneth

I have received a second communication from Virtualcol regarding the Dash-8. Kudos for their swift replies to my questions.

They have confirmed that it is their intention to fix the performance issues of the series 100 in time for release of their 200 and 300 models. Why am I harping on at them? Simple.. They produce several aircraft which are personal favorites of mine, that other developers seem to have ignored. (Dash 8-100 with early analogue cockpits, and CRJ 200 as first released before those fuselage extensions). I thus have a vested interest to see them make these as good as they can, given their casual audience and deliberately simplistic approach. I count myself as an occasional and casual user of airliners, so if they get the Dash 8's flying well, I will be happy!

So, what's their timeline for the 200 and 300 series? And which new liveries will be coming to the 100 series with the intended update? Answers at the link below.

That’s good to hear. I keep getting a red warning light flashing but nothing on the annunciation panel to indicate what has triggered it. Any ideas ?

So do I, and it drives me crazy. I hope they fix that too. I will give them a chance, and will bug them after their update if there are still issues. They will only up their game if customers contact them.

This notice has appeared on the VIRTUALCOL website. I am looking forward to trying this updated version.

Virtualcol – Dash 8 100 for MSFS (UPDATE 1.50.35)
Virtualcol is proud to announce that we have solved several issues reported by our customers:
Engine power, speed on the ground adjusted as real. New limit speed reached 290 knts (Overspeed). Typical cruise 265 knts, redline 280 knts. The takeoff now takes between 1000 and 1500 m with flaps at 10°, or 2000 m with flaps at 5°.
Flaps indicator fixed.
Sound adjusted to be more realistic (Thanks to Sander Van Ommen, who provided external engine sounds from crank, start, and engines running).
Condition lever, adjusted to crank->start with engines feathered->Start and unfeather propellers.
Animation of the propeller at every moment during startup is included.
Materials of switches, from bronze to steel.
Advisory and VSI have started using the panel breaker lateral, which is now included in the general circuit.
Errors fixed in the Advisory panel
Navigation in HSI data is now shown when the FMS/GPS mode is selected.
Anti-ice alerts fixed
Switches of AC/DC that were locked, fixed
Flight dynamics for takeoff and approach have been adjusted, improving flight stability. These values were adjusted to the real model.

Anybody had a go since it's recent update ? Thinking of adding this A/C to the hanger.

Yes. It is a lot better in terms of take-off, climb and cruise speeds. It also no longer bobs up and down in cruise. These are great plus points. For me, there is an issue where the aircraft banks slightly to the left when in straight and level flight. It does not turn, it just "inclines." I am in touch with the developer (Actually meaningful contact and very helpful), and they have not had any other reports of it. It reminded me of an issue I had with a Spitfire a while ago, and the same solution worked for me. I turned on auto rudder in assists, and it cured it.

Is it study level? No, but that is not what it was made for. Is it perfect? No. BUT it is the only Dash 8 we have, and might have for a while. In VR the cockpit is convincing enough to believe that you are in an old, somewhat worn, Dash 8. If you enjoy the experience instead of being over critical, I am finding it indeed to be sufficient for my casual airliner flying needs. I fly it manually, do not use FMS because even after decades of flight simming I never bothered to learn it. I use the autopilot simply, and gawk out the cockpit windows at the terrain as I cruise across central Canada with it. With the better cruise speed, I can now do Winnipeg to Calgary, or Regina, etc, in realistic time. Flights out of Toronto Island are fun too.

In short... I have no regrets buying it for my casual needs. And thanks to the above update and my temporary fix, it is flyable. That's my personal take on it.
