David Mulcahy, a.k.a. "No Dice" has passed...

This news is really sad. Dave was a truly kind soul who helped me with compassion when I was in a 'black dog' stage of my PTSD rehabilitation. I will miss him greatly.
I haven't posted for a while due to real world problems but have been checking out the site occasionally.

I am very sorry to learn about the passing. You will be missed and I will keep you and your family "in my smoke." Fly on and we'll all meet again on the other side, I'm sure.

Reading MR's latest post gave me an idea. Could we look at how much it would cost to maintain the FF site as is and have a yearly appeal for contributions from our members? That way all links would remain unbroken and the site in its present state, address and form would also be a memorial to Dave.

Michael,

This "feels" like the right solution to me, but I would be out of my element as to how to maintain it. However, if the cost is reasonable, I would fully support this. :encouragement:

Just FYI - I asked the SOH staff and admins to view this thread, perhaps we can discuss options.

It really saddens me to read this. I will remember him as the kind and supportive person he was.

This a terrible shock. Dave only posted an update to his Vietnam scenery a couple of days ago. I was about to send him an update to one of his World War One downloads when I saw this.

He was a real gentleman and will be missed.

John Fortin (Polar_Lion or Blood_Hawk1) has some downloads on Dave's site which are not here on SOH. I'll preserve them pending a decision.

Andrew,

It would be good to consult Dave's wife Karen. Her wishes should be paramount. She probably knows how Dave maintained the site and how she wants to proceed.
For now, respect and support are more important than a website.

So sad. We lost a friend in very similar circumstances. Praying for peace for his family.

Ravenna,

She more than likely will be responding. Dave had sent me a PM privately asking me to hold the keys if anything happened to him if this surgery went wrong, and I'm pretty sure he communicated this to Karen. When the dust settles, I'm sure this will be addressed. No worries, I am also concerned about her, and the rest of his family.

This is most saddening news.

It would be a little over two decades ago I came home with CD's labeled CFS & FS98, and pushed them each into the computer. I'd swear that steam was coming out my ears in the resulting program play.

About a week or two further on, in a moment of great revelation, I discovered a growing and dynamic online community of flight sim enthusiasts. Dave "No Dice" was already well installed as a solid and recognized creative personality in the social terra firma of CFS.

That's TWENTY years ago now.

He was always a positive creative contributor, and a consistent self motivated archivist, but most importantly, a happy influence on those he encountered.

This is one of those signposts that denote the rapid passing of time. It does go way too fast, and with it, the most precious souls flick past us and are quickly gone as the tides of change manifest themselves with the most impersonal and irresistible passage.

So now we add David Mulcahy to a growing list of those cherished, those who are missed forever.

I extend my sad condolences to his family and loved ones, and raise a toast to the man.

We'll miss you, No Dice.

Here's to great altitude, great tailwinds, and great visibility for you.

Fly high sir, fly well.

We'll miss you.

Cheers!

Bit late opening my emails today - absolutely stunned to read that No Dice has had his last roll of the dice - a truly generous spirit leaving a gap in the ranks - my thoughts are with his family

RIP Dave

Sorry to hear this. It seems we've lost quite a few senior statesmen over the past several years...Akemi, kelticheart, and Collin (the ship builder), to name a few, and now Mr. Mulcahy.

I feel very distraught over this. Dave was A1. It's really too sad for words.

The free flight site is a treasure for the community. I hope you can save it Rami.

Good morning,

Just a quick update...the SOH staff has made a full backup of the files on The Free Flight Site, and we are discussing the next steps, including hosting the entire site at SOH. I will let you know when the final choice and solution has been made.

I'm sure Dave appreciates all of our collective condolences. :encouragement:
