DC-3

You guys do know that there is a 3D Max model of the default DC-3 in the SDK?

Modeling SDK\SDSM7\Samples\Douglas_DC3

MJahn, wow, looks good! :ernae: Care to elaborate a little?

It would be great if someone could do a repaint of "Margie" with a nicely weathered and beat up livery , see attachment. That would fit right into the FSX Solomon 1943 scenario.

Cheers,
Mark

have you tried adding the rotation parameter to the [propeller] section of the aircraft.cfg?

[propeller]
thrust_scalar=1.0
rotation=1,1 //Engine 1,2,3,... Rotation direction. 1 = CW, -1 = CCW
propeller_type= 0 //0='Constant Speed' (variable pitch), 1=Fixed Pitch
propeller_diameter= 11.500
propeller_blades= 3
propeller_moi= 39.920
beta_max= 57.700 //57.7 at 46 inch radius point, AHT p. 178
beta_min= 22.700 //22.7 at 46 inch radius point
min_gov_rpm= 1200.000
prop_tc= 0.020
gear_reduction_ratio= 2.100 //ref see AHT p. 175 (other sources say 2.0, and a few even say ~1.8)
fixed_pitch_beta= 0.000
low_speed_theory_limit= 80.000
prop_sync_available= 0
prop_deice_available= 0
prop_feathering_available= 1
prop_auto_feathering_available= 0
min_rpm_for_feather= 0.0
beta_feather= 89.5

will this make the props turn in the right direction or just add the torque one would experience if they did?

Looking mighty good, but still a long way to go ;-) Keep up the good work Manfred.
Cheers, Rob

PS in the mean time you can the try DC2 :d (Thanks Kilo Delta....:ernae:) Remember: No DC3 without the DC2

It will only make it fly like it would, with CCW prop. The animation part of that is during the GMAX or, 3dsmax production. As for the SDK version I used it to create a FULL VC for the DC-3, including the right hand wing and engine. The only trouble is that all the elevators and flaps need to be reanimated and linked. Otherwise it looks awesome! I was working on a true Balsner Turbo engine for it, but have got lost in other projects right now. I did use the SDK dc3 to create a Broken up scenery object for SAR mission. Looks good, wings smashed engine parts strewn all over!

Thanks Rob - I'm staring at the DC-2 paintkit as we speak trying to second-guess the materials setup. This is an attempt at coming to grips with FSX. Talk of a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma... Texture layout is like this, provisionally, 2048 size, intentionally repainter fiendly, as you can see, but that's all so far.

For repaint detail it would be best to have the textures split up. if that is going to be the 2048, I know from experience that adding small words and decals are going to be useless. Personally i don't mind textures split up into multiples as long as they line up properly.

looks very cool man, oh btw look into the "alternate" engine varients and the ones that possibly had the dc-2 like R1820's 9 cylinder radials.. i would love to see one of the early 9 cylinder variant, but its totaly up to you man

Hi Manfred,

Looking great there! 2048 should do fine for a DC3 size plane. For more close-up detail you could split it up, but lining up is the problem.
I see you map the top of the fuselage seperately. That's a great idea. You can also map the rest of the bottom (behind the wing) separately.
When you have questions, on material setup or anything, you can mail or PM me.

Cheers, Rob

One can never have enough DC-2's and DC-3's or BT-67's:jump:Thank you to all who develop and model these aircraft be it pay or freeware.

alternatively, you can map it at 4096 x 2048 and that will allow you to get the fuselage in... then you can do another one (or three) at 2K x 2K for the wings and "extras".

this is what we're doing now... It also means that you can then reduce easily for those who are unlucky enough to have slower and older putes...

This is the size I get @ 2048, and it's more than I usually get, I am afraid 4096 would put tons of pressure on me to get each individual rivet right... This is just an experimental draft, looks far too blotchy and gets nowhere near what the DC-2 parades in. And may have to be done radically differently anyway considering the materials options available under FSX. But it's a beginning ... I hope.
