DCS Development Reports

Interesting. I do appreciate the very frank "What is Not going to be done" versus speculation and their holding releases until they're mostly done (usable). It's just a better business model in general. It may mean we're going to wait longer but that is fine by me.

***weekend news***
Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,
pilotfly.gif

We hope that the year has started well and that you have taken full advantage of the free to fly period. Thank you.

With the enormous changes in technology and the broad improvements we are planning, please be aware that Windows 7 will no longer be supported as of the release of DCS World 2.7 which we hope to be releasing in the coming months. We will of course be informing you well in advance when a firm date is finalised.

This week, we would like to take the opportunity of sharing development progress on DCS: The Channel. We are working on the final touches to Biggin Hill and Eastchurch airfields as well as Headcorn and High Halden Advance Landing Grounds. In addition to the existing 120 World War II missions we are working on a wide variety of new and exciting missions and campaigns which should be released in the coming weeks. These high quality missions should provide you with excellent immersion and will test your skills.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics Team

Support
Windows 7

We will no longer be supporting Windows 7. Users who do not want not to change their operating system can still enjoy DCS World 2.5.6. However, new updates will not be available. In order to attend to your needs more diligently, please download the latest version.

The Channel
Development Progress

The latest addition to the Channel map will be the fighter base that protected South East England from Luftwaffe bombers during the Battle of Britain. Over the course of the war, fighters based at Biggin Hill claimed thousands of enemy aircraft, at the cost of hundreds of aircrew lives.

Please note that DCS: The Channel will soon be moving to Release state. Don’t miss the opportunity of enjoying the 20% Early Access discount while it lasts. Check out the In Development Screenshots.

WWII
Missions

We have now introduced a difficulty selector option used in conjunction with the F10 Comms Menu. Options "EASY" "MEDIUM" or "HARD" will allow you to revisit missions and test your improved skill set. Singleplayer and campaign missions include new briefings.

Mission sets are wide and varied and will include:

  • Bomber Escort
  • Flight/Section Scrambles
  • Anti-Shipping Strikes
  • Photographic Reconnaissance
  • Airfield Strikes
  • Train Strafing
  • Close Air Support
  • Bomber/Fighter Intercepts

In some Single Player missions we have introduced FWAF (Fly With A Friend). It allows you to upload the mission to your own server and fly it with a friend or virtual squadron. Ideal for training and for those not quite ready to venture into multiplayer just yet. This is a great way to share the experience with those of you who are just getting started in DCS World.

Thank you again for your passion and support,

Yours Sincerely,

F/A-18C
Hornet

An issue where RWR Contacts displayed on the wrong azimuth has now been resolved. We fixed an issue where moving the TDC caused the radar beam to stick. We also fixed a JSOW A/C manoeuvre error that caused a miss.

Fuel Low BIT has been added, as well as auto-lase for the GBU-24 Paveway III. We are planning for these features and many more to be released in the next update to DCS World Open Beta 2.5.6.

Check out the In Development Screenshots.

F/A-18C Hornet
Development Progress

Ground Moving Target (GMT) Radar Mode
Locating ground targets can be a difficult task, an important tool that can assist you is the Ground Moving Target (GMT) Air-to-Ground (A-G) radar mode. When enabled, this mode detects moving ground units and allows you to designate them for tracking. Note that GMT will not detect stationary targets.

When paired with the AGM-65F Maverick and laser-guided bombs, GMT can be a useful tool for detecting, tracking, and engaging mobile targets.

SEA Radar Mode
Whilst the general MAP Air-to-Ground radar mode has been available for some time, we will soon introduce the SEA A-G mode. This mode allows the radar to detect and track ships out to 80 nm. This is particularly useful for engaging ships using the AGM-84D Harpoon anti-ship missiles with specific range and bearing targeting. SEA mode can also be interleaved to display MAP ground returns.

Instruction Video: SEA Radar Mode

When a target has been designated in SEA mode, the targeting pod can also be slaved to the target.

Defensive Systems Update
We are pleased to announce several new defensive features planned for the next update. These include the addition of Semi/Automatic (S/A) and AUTO expendable countermeasure programs, the Airborne Self-Protection Jammer (ASPJ), and jammer effects on the radar.

Instruction Video: Defensive Systems Update

Transmit Designate
We’ll be adding the Transmit Designate (TXDSG) option on the Situational Awareness (SA) display. When enabled, it allows you to transmit suits to ground designation points and Launch & Steering (L&S) targets for flight members and friendly aircraft on the same Link-16 network.

Instruction Video: Target Designation (TXDSG)

Additions
Highlights

As well as the substantial push to complete the Hornet’s new features, we would like to mention a notable addition:

Handy Wind Bulk Carrier
A new civilian ship equipped with a functioning helipad for:

  • DCS: UH-1H Huey
  • DCS: SA342 Gazelle
  • DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark 2

F-5E Tiger II
The headwind and tailwind anomalies have now been fixed.

Mission Editor
AI escort aircraft not engaging targets correctly issues have been resolved.

DCS World
We have added more realistic cockpit sounds when using weapons. The F-10 Ruler in VR and multi monitor mode has now been fixed. The SA-2 Guidance has received a necessary accuracy improvement. Also, user created ground units now shows in white in F10 view.

You can expect these minor fixes and many more additions to be included in the next Open Beta 2.5.6 update planned for next week. We are incredibly optimistic about where we’re heading, and we believe that the opportunities for developers and the creative community are endless, as are all the positive and meaningful benefits to our customers.

We thank you again for your passion and support,

Yours sincerely,

“Dear virtual pilots,
This is a joint letter from all 3rd party campaign developers to the entire DCS World community. You know, we do not look at each other as competitors. We’re more like a virtual team of mission building enthusiasts. Although we work on our projects separately, we constantly help and support each other.
The most essential part of our success is you, the community. We’re forever grateful for the support and enthusiasm.”

Tinian Island
Introduction

Tinian is located approximately 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometres) from mainland Japan, and was chosen as the suitable staging base for continuous heavy bomber attacks on the Japanese Islands. Immediately after the island's seizure by the US in the summer of 1944, construction began on the largest air base in the Pacific region, covering almost the entire island.

The four runways at North Field were lettered "A", "B", "C" and "D" from north to south and were said to resemble the deck of a busy aircraft carrier.

The North Field airbase was the first loading and launching point for the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. At the end of WWII the base was placed in a standby status and officially closed in March, 1947.

Tinian International Airport is a public airport originally constructed by the Japanese during WWII with two parallel runways. It was subsequently repaired by the Americans, and then called West Field. Tinian airport now covers an area of 1,416 acres (573 ha) with one of the runways measuring 8,600 x 150 ft (2,621 x 46 m).

In May 2012, the United States Marine Corps VMFA-121 operated its F/A-18D Hornets from the airport using M-31 aircraft carrier arresting gear systems. This airport is now owned by Commonwealth Ports Authority.

Another big installation on the island - Robert E Kamosa Transmitting Station. The antenna curtain array along the central west coast of the island is a class of large multi element wire radio transmitting antennas, used in the shortwave radio bands. Suspended by supporting wires and strung between pairs of steel towers up to 300 ft (90 m) tall. These antennas are used by international shortwave radio stations to broadcast at transcontinental distances.

Rota Island
Introduction

Rota Island is the smallest of the populated islands and the second southernmost island of the Marianas archipelago. Despite the fact that the island had a small Japanese garrison of more than 2000 men during WWII, American troops never invaded it. It was however bombed occasionally by the U.S Navy in attempts to silence Japanese warning transmissions about B-29 Superfortress bomber attacks.

Sinapalo village is the biggest settlement in the island and features Rota International Airport. The single runway was built and manned by the Japanese until the U.S Navy bombed it into disuse at the end of WWII. In September of 1945, the airfield was renovated and extended an impressive 5,000ft to serve as an emergency landing strip.

The Songsong village on the island of Rota is located along the southwestern part of the island. The village has a population of less than 1,000 inhabitants and boasts a recognisable landmark known as Wedding Cake mountain, Mt. Tinubal. The layered rock and capes have been recreated in detail to include the natural dips of volcanic rock structures and the gentle sloping forms of the limestone plateau in the North part of the island.
Black Sea Resolve ‘79
SorelRo

Black Sea Resolve is a fictional, story-based campaign that will test your A/A and A/G skills. Set March 1979, you will fly as part of an F-5E Tiger II squadron and support the independence of the former Soviet Union provinces.
Campaign Features:
25 story-driven missions
Over 300 voiceovers
Late 1970’s units set
Full-scale conflict that will progress throughout the campaign
A large variety of missions; CAP, CAS, RES-CAP, Iron Hand
Detailed briefings, kneeboard files, and supporting documentation

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,

Mossie
Early Access

All systems and components have been modelled in excruciating detail and include the recent cooling system updates that were made to DCS: P-47D Thunderbolt.

Early Access Features;

  • High-quality external 3D model
  • 6 Degree of Freedom fully clickable cockpit with latest visual effects
  • Flight Dynamics based on official reports, our own CFD research and pilot feedback
  • Full Fuel system and optional external tanks
  • Full electrical system
  • Full hydraulic and pneumatic system
  • Propeller feathering

Early Access Armament:

  • 4 British Browning .303 machine guns
  • 4 Hispano 20mm guns
  • 250lbs and 500lbs bombs in the bomb bay and under each wing

The damage model for the Mossie considers the internal wood structure of the airplane and uses each internal element of the aircraft - oil, air, hydraulic and cooling systems, engine, throttle, trim, and the airframes main strength spars and stringers to calculate the visual damage.

We are now able to consider all these factors, which in turn enables us to more accurately simulate damage to the airframe and the effects on the flight model. For example, damage to the wing skin will lead to a decrease in the lift and cause more drag, damage to the spar will cause strength reduction and potentially wing snap under certain strains.

We look forward to sharing further progress, please check out In Development Screenshots.

When the Mossie becomes available in Early Access, we will be considering feedback from the community and working on the next stages of development.

Features coming after Early Access:

  • Rockets armament
  • Radio units T1154 (transmitter) & R1155 (receiver)
  • The historical accurate navigation system for WWII aircraft
  • Controllable AI navigator and radio operator

Mi-24P Hind
Development Report

We are currently improving in cockpit reflections using our new pre-calculated ray tracing technique. This enhancement will be deployed to other modules in the near future.

We are adjusting the sight line direction controls and missile guidance from the operator's seat.

The operator AI features are being tested and debugging is going smoothly.

We have a Planned 2.7 date!!
