Decision time approaching

Wah hail! This morning it took four tries and two computer re boots to get the sim to get past 0%. When it finally loaded it decided I was a new user and had to go through all the setup stuff and of course it forgot all my control bindings. Howzabout we get to keep our control bindings on our own computer?
Couldn't agree with you more!

Interesting.
I lost some of my Control bindings yesterday, specifically the keystroke to pop the camera view in & out of the cockpit.
Then about 4 hours later, all was restored, so a cloud hiccup somewhere??

Decision made. here is the first crude screenshot. Still loads to do, but three weeks should take care of that!

Ok so new PC and monitor operational as of this morning. 2024 is loaded. Managed to figure out how to move the Community folder to my SSD. Gone through the Graphics settings etc but have not yet configured my controls. First impressions of the UI are - why did they change it! I thought I would take a peep at what it's all going to look like so just loaded the Canadair 415 at Gibraltar with live weather. To be honest I am shocked at how bad it looks. Even after 5 minutes the airport /runway graphics had not loaded properly and the Rock and the surrounding hills look terrible. Going to take a break and then come back to it later but I hope things will improve - I was worried that my 70 mbps broadband would be problem and looks like it is....

Take a look at your rolling cache and put it at 32 Gb, at least after a few flights, things will be better!

Normally 70 Mbps is sufficient, if your DL is 50 Mbps.

I live in the sub arctic where the land transmission is little better than dialup so have moved to Starlink. Sometimes it is very good, other times not as the main satellite coverage ends at about 55 deg North. The surprising thing is that the sim generally works well and mostly I get a small but irritating box notifying me about traffic not loading. Even with a connection that can be unreliable, it generally works as well or better than 2020. My general DL speeds are much less than 50, maybe 20 if I am lucky.

Honestly, that explains a lot about you losing your bindings/settings so often. M$ really should do something about that.

Not everybody, especially in North America, has a super fast broadband connection.

@Dangerousdave26 told us about his bandwidth. Providers over here in Belgium can get sued for those speeds.

I was going to wait for MSFS2024 to mature a little more, but the itch got the better of me, and I had to scratch it. I bought it about 72 hours ago, so I haven't had time to do very much. However, from what I've flown so far, I do rather like it. Already there are many people saying that no matter what the bugs are, they won't be going back to FS2020. It wont be long before I'm saying the same.

I haven't gone back to 2020 though both are there side by side. The whole reason I am at 2024 has to do with several projects I am involved in and learning the new flight dynamics and systems is a sufficient challenge to keep me occupied. For someone who just wants to sim, perhaps it's not there as yet. It is quite spectacular for flying bug smashers and helicopters about at low altitude. South Island NZ is quite the place in the sim. For some reason, the way LOD's are set up, distant mountains often look worse than in 2020.

Remember we didn't even have helicopters in 2020 for some time! I do think the aerodynamics are improved, if not perfect.

Just to "top & tail" this thread - despite much help from friends on here I have had to concede defeat on 2024 and I have uninstalled. To be fair to Microsoft they have refunded me immediately. It took a few days to finally succeed in getting all my controls assigned and working reliably and my graphics settings adjusted. However, every time I tried to load a flight away from a previously local cached location or aircraft the sim just would not load. I can only conclude that despite meeting the 50mbps "recommended" MSFS download speed criteria (mine is 61mbps today) as I had feared my internet connection is just not up to the cloud based model. It can cope fine with the less demanding cloud elements of 2020 but 2024 is too much.

So I decided to re-install 2020 this morning only to find that I am now suffering from the "insert-the-microsoft-flight-simulator-game-disc" error and despite trying all the cures posted on line and even a specific set of corrective actions on the Zendesk page I still can't access 2020 either! My original 2020 was the 10 disc retail version back in aug 2020. Having got that you then redeem access through the Microsoft Store. I can see my licence for the game on both my Store and Xbox accounts but there is obviously some discrepancy between the two which means that the Sim is not being recognised as mine. I have raised a ticket with the Zendesk but last time I did that it took weeks for them to respond. So I think I'll be buying an external disc drive tomorrow and digging out that Disc Number !!

Honestly this hobby can be so infuriating at times !!

Honestly, I think M$ shot themselves and us in the foot with this new iteration of MSFS.

They should allow people to download the regions and planes that they're interested in on their rigs. That would also help M$. It would reduced the traffic to Azure immensely, once everyone gets their stuff locally.

To quote @DennyA the release of this sim has been a huge fustercluck.

Might re-visit in the Summer - as you say though the ability to download most used aircraft and scenery to a local drive is the only way this product can work for those of us with slow internet connections. However, even then it's not a great outcome is it.

In the meantime I have bought a $50 external CD drive for my brand new PC and have inserted the original Disc 1 and hey presto I can now download and re-install 2020. That's another double-whammy as at 50-60 mbps it's going to take a few days to re-load the bugger.

So $4k spent and back where I started !! Needless to say Microsoft are off my Christmas Card list.

The internet speed may have something to do with your troubles, but mine is consistently below 50 for the last few weeks and I have not had any issues with the things you describe.
I am on what ever server MS chooses for Germany based systems…. Have not tried a different one since the starting issues of 2020.
But I would still prefer being able to download the pieces I want and not have rely on the stream all the time.

Well, that is just it. You're in Germany, close to one of the M$ datacenters that are a lot less tasked than the US datacenters.

It definitely seems as though it is the datacenters, but which ones, and where are they located? John (Bomber_12th) and I live in the north central portion of the US, less than 300 miles apart, and we seem to not be having any problems after the initial fluster cuck. My updates and loading times are always under three minutes, with only small burps in the video, which are gone the second playthrough, which I only see if I'm doing something else at the time.

That would indeed make sense. The DL speed alone can’t be the deciding factor, as I said my connection is below 50 MBps in all but the rarest of moments. And I tried to stress it a bit more by running a webbased TV broadcast service and downloaded a 12Gb file I had prepared on my cloud drive….all while running FS24.
I do however never run live traffic in the sim, but I have added ActveSky, FSltl, BYATC ….. and it still works.

Well except for all the things that don’t work:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
