Default CFS2 Airfields

Bobhegf:
wouldn't it be easier in the long run to have two installs;
one a regular, and one a RhumbaFlappy?

merlin2

Right, I think you need a separate install for RhumbaFlappy's scenery. Bob is correct, it's easy enough to get rid of the stock airfields. But you can't have the GSL turned off if you want GSL with the new scenery, as I'm sure we all do.

All you need is an empty cfs2.GSL file to start out with. I haven't tried this, but I think you can create an empty GSL file using GSLman, which everybody has. Just create a copy of your existing GSL file, select the copy with GSLman, and click on "remove". GSLman should then remove everything from the original that's in the copy, which would be everything.
Then you just fill up the empty GSL file with new GSL as it gets created.

It won' hurt to try it. If it messes up your cfs2.GSL file, just rename the copy to cfs2.GSL, and you're back to square 1. I'll try it myself when I get around to it.

I have been able to creat GSL emptys using the stock CFS2 GSL program and if you use GSLman you should be able to do the same.:typing:

Well, I checked out the GSLman method and it worked. GSLman emptied the original cfs2.GSL file. Then I reversed the process and GSLman filled the empty cfs2.GSL file back up.

I also tried creating an empty cfs2.GSL file directly with notepad, but for some reason that didn't work. I mean it worked, but CFS2 complained about it. I guess there has to be a header or something in the file or CFS2 won't use it.

I think that overall the more accurate we can be the better--that's because for me at least the fantasy of the game is connected with the reality of the history.[/QUOTE]

Just started with CFS2, but it doesn't take long to realize that it is a very versatile sim.

It is also an old sim which you guys have improved with a lot of hard work. Kudos!

The new improved mesh is a major step forward that will require a lot of effort to adjust to. It will all be worth it, IMO.

I think of it as a "new" version of CFS2, perhaps CFS2+.

Having a stock version while building a new version seems like a good idea.

Many developers go through this same thing with every new FS release from MS, but who would want to go back to FS98?

Keep up the good work and keep up the great spirit I've seen displayed here by everyone!

Having read all the comments in this thread i suggest the following. That each one of you martyrs does his part, topography, mesh, scenery, gsl,new default airfields, etc then put it all together on cd's with due beta testing,"is 10 years enough?" and after that if any of the remaining team has'nt been taken away in a straight jacket or passed away please contact me and i will gladly pay a fee for the enormous work done.I'm not kidding.

Hey, can we also get a volunteer martyr to handle a makeover project for 10 years of campaigns and missions on that CD too?...i'll provide the list and pay for that part...LOL :typing:

But on a serious note mates, it doesn't matter whether you have two installs or just your current one for the updated scenery. If you haven't learned how to edit missions or build new ones by the time Dick rolls this out, you're gonna be stranded on the high sea with nothing to paddle with except Freeflight and Quick Combat. Not one of your existing stock or addon PTO campaigns and missions that use the stock bases will be playable as-is. You'll be fine in the CBIT, but you won't benefit from the new stuff there. Of course you also can limit your PTO gameplay to those missions involving strictly A2A over land or sea or air attacks on enemy surface craft.

So let's get signed up in Rami's School of Makeovers right away, otherwise you're at the mercy of those who can and just may be in the mood to step up and do some full remakes for you. Food for thought....

Hi all.

Has anyone researched the true locations, size, heading, and elevations of the default CFS2 airfields.

I've started relocating them to their real-world positions, but some areas ( like Koror and Arakabesan ) appear to be ficticious. I've done about 15 airfields, and I haven't found one located correctly or elevated correctly.

Just looking to save some time.

Dick

Hi Dick ,
perhaps this thread about a pdf document link could help you ,I've no find time to check it in detail but it seems interesting for its historical source

Good! So CFS2 is being remade into a more detailed and historically accurate sim. I'll toot my own horn here. By making Radio chatter packs for a greater variety of languages we are also making it a worldwide sim. I don't want to see anybody make money off of it, but if everyone the world over is working to build up this sim then we have a beautiful thing going. We can keep our old installs until they become obsolete. This is what we do anyway right?

I am still putting the call out there for people who speak languages other than those already represented in CFS2 to record raw files. I'll get to them all sooner or later. I would also encourage those who understand the way raw files are processed into gvr files to help me with this project. We are trying to turn this into a worldwide sim. HOW COOL IS THAT? :help::help::help::help::help::help:

If you do not know how to process gvr files but want to help I will teach you. It is very easy, the programs are free, and I AM a professional teacher. :woot::Banane35::Banane35::Banane35:

I think about 2 months will work for having the airfields, detailed watermasking and LOD9 mesh done for each area. I'm nearly half done.

That would still leave room for beaches, roads, streams, ponds... new landclass and waterclass.

All the areas are the LOD5 areas that contain stock airfields.

The GSL will need to have objects moved to get them aligned with the runways, and any historical targets should be included.

The trouble with GSL is that in say 1944, an airfield may belong to the US rather than Japan, so the GSL now gets in the way.

GSL is really more for freeflight or campaign level. Each individual mission can have a different GSL ( that's why there's a folder ), and each mission can also have it's own layouts as well.

Keeping the CFS2.gsl clean and simple would be a good idea... say mid 1943.

In fact, making a series of GSLs by date and theatre wouldn't be a bad idea... for the default or this terrain update.

Hi guys;
I am sure you are aware of this but I recently made a post on a " interesting site" that gave descriptions of bases in Korea and also another that had many combat maps from WW2 that showed airfields etc.

WOW!

What a humongous effort is under way here! :jump:

I'll do my part, with the spare time I can offer, I did my share of toying with missions, changing airport locations and so on in my CFS2.

I routinely change aircrafts in addon and stock missions, for example, since I don't see the point in spending time and money to download new models, if I can't use them in combat. One of the things I did most lately, is creating flights composed by different skins of the same model, a marvellous tweak greatly described by Cody Coyote in his last Mission/Campaign tutorial.

The resulting historical immersion is fantastic, I love flying with 3 aircrafts that show different ID codes and meeting an enemy with the same features.

I learned how to use the built-in MB GSL tools as well. I placed airport objects and trees in all of Pen32Win's Northern France airbases for my BoB campaigns with them.

So, I offer what I can. I only hope this renewed enthusiasm for CFS2 Plus doesn't loose momentum suddenly, as it did when Sander had the same idea a couple of years ago.

Cheers!

Airfield Listing (WIP)

Dick,

You may already be way past this point, but here's a draft listing I started (but never completed)

For what it's worth ...

A late reply, but here goes...........

I don't get much time for CFS2, instead the time I get has been used researching the location of WW2 bases in the SWPA. My primary tool I'm working with is Google Earth. From varous documents I have extracted maps and drawings of airfield layouts, then placed them over the existing world. I'm finding these overlays fascinating to see how an entire airbase can vanish (under a suburb) or re-orientate to accept modern jet traffic. Placing them as they were is proving to be a great way to record this history. Not all answers have been found, but it is interesting to use a duel view computer to compare Google and CFS2 in slew mode. Just to confirm what others have said, CFS2 is definitly far from exact. In perspective it is only a game, but you could say that if it is out to represent history, then a correct 3D model would be desirable, before fictions are all that exist as facts.
Due to limited time in the real world I still have much to do. It's a strange thing to be doing for fun, I should play CFS2 instead!! In case I run out of time I have concerntrated on a state by state research so that some may actually get completed. From what I have started, most to least complete are grouped as follows
Northern Territory (over 100 airfields airfelds, ELGs, and prewar RFD LGs)
Queensland (in progress)
NSW & ACT (in progress)
Territory of Papua & New Guinea (in progress)
Solomon Protectorate (started)
Victoria (started)
Dutch New Guinea (started)
Western Australia (started)
Japanese Mandated Territory (started)
South Australia (started)
Tasmania (started)
Map information for northern and Central Pacific is at the end of this cue, waiting in it's folders.
My work recently started over again by taking aerial photos, and placing them in Google Earth at the same angles as originally shot from. At the same time I began adding towns and bases. This came about partially because of my opinion that the most dissappointing thing about CFS2 scenery is how there was no effort to represent the towns being defended. For example why does Port Moresby have one ficticious runway and no port facilities to defend?
The work I have done so far would likely be a helpful guide to scenery creation, but I've been a little slack in places noting sources. Further I'm unsure of copyright on some stuff and where I stand in relation. This aside, can KMZ data be brought into scenery design? Maybe that would be the time saver your after?
Just to add more answers to your question, there are various websites with info. An easy source is http://www.pacificairfields.com/ .
Hopefully your effort will see more time than mine.

Guys, since I have moved from MTO to PTO for MB, I am really interested in the work that is being done on the Mesh and scenery LODs. I absolutely love Rhumba's work worldwide and close enough is good enough for me. That being said, I cannot go back to MS CFS2 scenery, ewww!

I do hope one of you all has the GSL skills to put airbase infrastructure in on rhumba's mesh though.

Also, it slows down the MBing having to rebuild bases all the time.

BTW, I moved all of the RAAF take offs at Port Moresby onto 14 mile airstrip in my 76th IDA missions.
Much better than taking off in the middle of all those runways.
