Default terrain coverage looks ugly

I use Rhumbaflappy's LOD5, 7 and 8 mesh as:

1: A world wide (LOD 5 and 7) base mesh over top of the stock mesh...which is probably LOD4 at best.

2: A major enhancement of Europe over the stock mesh. Since I don't do a great deal of flying on that side of the pond, Rhumba's LOD8 mesh is good enough.

In those areas that I do most of my flying, I am covered with the FSGenesis freeware US mesh, a really killer mesh for Hawaii (LOD 10 I think) and a really nice LOD 9 mesh set that covers the Greece and improves the Greek airports. I do have plans to install Holgar Sandmann's mesh to enhance Alaska and the Canadian West to a higher level of detail and make my preferred Bush Flying areas even more stunning.

As far as what to install from Golden Wings/Silver Wings, I simply installed it to a dummy folder, then copied the texture files out of the Scenery/World/Texture folder and pasted them into the Scenery/World/Texture folder of my working installs. Then I replaced some of those files with other files (improved cliff textures for instance).

A while back I posted a text file in a thread on what I have done to make my freeware install look almost as good as a payware based install in terms of mesh, textures, runway textures, clouds. I need to get back to that and update it with some of the newer stuff I have added to my installs.

I know alot of people are using Ground Evironment Pro along with Ultimate Terrain, but can you put these two products on top of the payware FSgenesis mesh?

Mesh is a bit more complicated. I use Rhumbaflappy's LOD5, 7 and 8 mesh as the base mesh (lots and lots of files to download),

My tiny brain is completely befuddled by the SOH file libraries. Could you please post a link to these mesh files, and also to the tutorial you had written for them? I would be very appreciative.

How do the LOD numbers relate to resolution? Higher number = higher resolution, or higher number = lower resolution?

Thanks. :ernae:

Next question. There seems to be at least two ways of expressing mesh resolution, meters and LOD. How do they equate? I'm currently using the free FSGenesis 76 and 38 meter mesh. Are the 5, 7 and 8 LOD meshes going to be higher or lower resolution? Thanks again. :ernae:

Sidney,
I believe that LOD 10 and 38 metre are just two ways of describing the same mesh resolution. Generally, the resolution changes by a factor of 2, so that LOD 9 is 76 metre and LOD 11 is 19 metre mesh. None of this has anything to do with the accuracy of the mesh - for example, Dick's recent mesh is far superior to all previous offerings in terms of accuracy even if it is lower resolution than, say, your FSGenesis mesh.

One thing to be aware of when adding new mesh is that it may cause a few glitches with coastlines and where watermasks meet non-watermasks,
hope that helps,
Ro

What a long and crazy week.

Dave, I'll look into the mesh you mention once I get things (in my head) sorted as for the installation procedures of all this mess. My head is starting to get foggy trying to absorb all the info shared here.

...FSglobal 2010 LOD is as follows;
High Quality Coverage of North America (and p.Canada!): Nationwide LOD11 (19m)

After reading the installation docs for FSglobal again, I learned that my library (order) placement is correct. Upon further reading I also learned that there are irregularities for many different places that can not or will not be fixed due to the data acquired to create the mesh.

... SNIP....

OBIO...Now for a question I think is real important.

1
)...Do I need the Rhumbafluppy Mesh if I am using FSglobal 2010? If yes, does the readme give instruction for library order priority?

.... SNIP...

Another note, just thinking of doing all this makes me extremely nervous. I don't want to botch up my install of FS9 and have to start all over :isadizzy:

Since the FS Global 2010 is 19 meter in all of the US and Canada you do not need any other Meshes. That is the most detail mesh you can have.

You still need to make the fs9.cfg file change to allow the sim to display the Mesh correctly.

TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21

Other than that you only need to find textures you like better. For that just do some experimenting. You may want to get Real Environment Professional it is what I use for textures but you can mix and match as you like. I use BananaBob's Environment map instead of the one in REP.

To avert a major FS Failure simply buy a USB hard drive and copy the whole FS9 folder to the external drive. If some thing goes wrong you have a complete backup of your sim.

Good luck

I appreciate everyone's assistance. I've got the rhumbaflappy mesh installed and it seems to be a noticeable improvement over the FSG free mesh I was using. :guinness:
