Defiant or Blackburn Roc for CFS3?

Hello Non,

Here is a link to the excellent Fleet Air Arm Archive website on the Barracuda and here's the Wikipedia entry. If you can put your hands on it, this month's (May in publishing) Aeroplane magazine has the Barracuda as it's in-depth aircraft. It just goes to show that trying to force an aircraft to be a dive bomber is often disasterous. More than a few Barracuda's had wings pulled off by the stresses of the dive!

BTW,as you can see my avatar chap is back. He is one of the most incredible RAF personalities I've come across, and unknown to most people. His name is Wing Cmdr Bertie Rex O'Bryen 'Sammy' Hoare. He was an exemplary Mosquito night intruder pilot, but was just as proud of his moustache. He once claimed that it was only worthy to be called a moustache if it was 6 inches from wing tip to wing tip and that you could see the tips of the 'tache from behind!

Hey Beau, Always REALLY luv your amazing font of info.... :medals:
Any idea why that Barracuda has the unusual exhaust manifold? (cheers)

Any idea why that Barracuda has the unusual exhaust manifold?

The idea was to hide the Merlin's exhaust flares at night, thus leaving the pilot's night vision unimpaired. Semi-recessed into the nose, the whole manifold would get hot enough to glow bright red at night and could be seen from some miles away! :isadizzy: Different layouts were tried and the Mark II finally settled on Lancaster-style multi-ejectors, but the recess for the original manifold was kept until the Mark V.

Thanks for the link to Corrado's model, Beau; the Aeroplane article had sparked my interest. :icon29:

Sir Beau

Thanks very much for all the info.
I love the akwardness of the Barracuda. Wonder why there are no missions in CFS3 for it...:applause:

I have an old one called the Lonely Queen; it's an attack on the Tirptiz, so it's an hitorical one. It is for old ETO though, so you'll need to open it up in notepad and check you've the necessary ships & facilities. PM me your e-mail and I'll send it to you. I can't find any details who made it, so you'll have to take it as is.

:wavey:Hey Beau, Is this the mission you mean? It's an CFS3 one.

Semi Historical: A three mission pack of FAA Operations to destroy the Tirpitz, the sistership to the Bismarck. FAA Operation Tungsten, an all out attack on the Tirpitz located at Altafjord. 21 Barracudas and 40 fighters were launched under favorable weather conditions. In this mission you will fly one of the Barracudas. FAA Operation Goodwood III an additional attack on the Tirpitz which included Firefly's. You will fly a Firefly and hit ground and AA targets in support of the Barracuda attack on the Tirpitz. FAA Operation Tungsten Rescue Op is an opportunity to fly the lend/lease Grumman Gosling in a rescue attempt to save a downed pilot.

Or this one

<Mission>
<Params Version="3.0" Directive="anti_ship" Country="Britain" Aircraft="barracuda" Airbase="coll34" Date="4/3/1944" Time="9:00" Weather="scatteredclouds4low.xml" Multiplayer="y" MultiplayerOnly="n"/>
<Title>The Lonely Queen of the North</Title>
<SubTitle>Sink the Tirpitz</SubTitle>
<Overview>The Tirpitz is the only german battleship remained anyhow she represents a constant threat for our convoys.</Overview>

I have this one, :isadizzy:but don't who made it

The one I meant is the latter. However I now remember the other. Thanks for that mate. I really think that we need to update these or write them anew for ETO.

Beau

Sir Beau

Thanks for sending me the mission
I recalled later that I already had it. It comes in the same pack as the plane itself!
I updated it and added some much needed flak and a more suitable weather file. Now it is working ok on ETO Era 4.
My Barracudas have to land on the Eagle after the mission is completed. Not many planes land on carriers so well as this strange bird. I simply love it.

Nevertheless the mission takes place in Holland (as "Norway") and uses the Scharnhost (as the "Tirpitz"). Maybe it should be rewritten in another scenario.:)guinness:?)

Cheers

Ahoy Non,

check your e-mail ship mate!

I've included a new download at Beau'sCFS3, a pack of non-ETO ships that I use in various anti ship missions and it includes the Bismarck/Tirpitz.

Sir Beau

I must say you always astonish me with your kindness and elegance. E-mail received, Sir. Would you like to try the Lonely queen once it is ready?

Non.
