Based on the true story of Navy pilot Ensign Jessie Brown.

Watched this last night and liked it a lot for the story and the flying sequences. Bearcats, Corsairs, Skyraiders, one beautiful DC-3.
The blend between real aircraft and the CGI aircraft was really well done. I think most of the non-combat sequences are with real warbirds???

Yep, I posted about this in the Cantina when it was in theaters -- it was amazing on the big screen!

Aerial shots were done using real aircraft, except for the crash sequence. CGI was used to recreate the carriers (they actually built a carrier deck at an airport in Georgia and blue-screened the water behind it!), the combat aspects, etc. but the flying is all real.

Even the pilots in the cockpits are actually in the air, in T-6s with modifications to the rear cockpits so they'd look like they were in Corsairs and Bearcats.

The movie itself is fantastic, but it's worth watching just for the warbird footage!

In addition to the warbirds already mentioned, the Planes of Fame Air Museum's MiG-15 also makes an appearance in the movie (that part of which is of course not true to the story-line). The parts of the film in which the Corsairs and Skyraiders are flying over "Korea" were actually filmed flying around Wenatchee, Washington.

All of the Corsair in-cockpit shots were done in the studio, using a mock-up. However, the in-cockpit scenes for the Bearcats were made using Rod Lewis' Cuban Sea Fury T.20, with some movie paint added, filming the actors in the rear cockpit:

Some more behind-the-scenes images. Obviously all of the Corsairs should be -4 variants, but only one of the Corsairs used was a -4. The rest were made up of an F4U-1A, FG-1D's and an F4U-7.

I really liked the aerial sequence parts of the film, but I have to depart from the rest of you about the film overall. In my observation, the acting was sort of - yawn....... NC
