I know this is off the topic, but I want to know must I buy a Ditginal police scanner to
listen to police frequencies? I have gone to other sites on this topic for information,
but they all want to sell me a scanner not answer my question.

Cheers

Around here in rural TN, anything they don't want heard on a scanner, they make a cell phone call.

In most cases where they are restricted you can apply for a permit to have a scanner by explaining your need. Most of the rules were made well before cell phones, and PCs were not commonplace. Now there are sites that you can listen right on the computer as well as phone apps. It's been clear for a long time that in many ways our technological cleverness is far out pacing our wisdom to wield it well. Like was mentioned already when we really want privacy we use phones or face to face.

why what?...why have a sanner?..why? do LE use cell phones?.or go face to face?....or use scrambled whatever?...

i like my scanner so i can keep an "ear" on my freinds i used to work with..and i enjoy listening to the aircraft in the area,( i no longer listen to police, ive heard my cousins and neighbors get arrested, thats not fun) but i like to listen to fire (where my friends are) and the the local airports..

Why? A fair question. There's lots of reasons, good and bad, but the permit request process shows that at least at some level some states want to have that question answered. One reason is what Daveroo said, keeping up with buddies or just keep tabs on what's going on in your area, call it a hobby if you like. Another I can think of is in places where dangerous weather is common. Critical information can not only save you own life but can save neighbors and friends as well.

Thank You All For Helping Me

Thank you all for helping me now it is much clearer about scanners.

Cheers And Thanks

CJ thank YOU for raising this issue - living in the Golden Isles, right on the water and cut off from the mainland if the causeway is closed down, it would be nice to know what's going on come hurricane season, right around the corner. I have on my shelf, wonder of wonders, a transistor radio with a small short-wave section on it but nothing that I think would be useful for real emerg. comm stuff in this area. A scanner for GCPD plus the GCFD in the area is probably a good idea.
