Maintenance Points: 4 Crashed on Go around attempt. Totally dark

Yikes.:icon_eek: I can't believe you attempted this one in the dark. I don't think there are any lighs and the dead end canyon is a killer. Looks like Pampe Grande has claimed it's third victim.

Is that a challenge? Dirt runway, no lights...

I accept!

Actually there are "lights"... a town on one side of that pit and a tiny house on the ridge that can help serve to line one up with the runway.

Hi Jeff and Ozzie,

Yep, I put another one into the side of a mountain.

That's not the half of it. What a terrible night in the Peruvian Andes!

What story it is! When I get more time I'll give the details and pictures, but for now here's the crux of it.

It was a comedy of errors from the start.

Actually we didn’t crash At Pampe Grande we crashed at Anta (SPHZ). That was a typo on my part.

First of all the Sperry gyros were non-op. After leaving Jaen we turned it on and it started making gentle S turns and would oscillate until the S turns became steep turns. We had to turn it off and hand fly. Back in days, of learning to fly, I used to think it was cool to fly a whole plan that way, but hand flying missions like these are no longer on my cool list. :)

After wasting more than of half hour of precious daylight looking for Pampe Grande we ended up landing in a field 1 ½ miles from it. I’ve since started at SPJB and am not surprised. The field actually camouflages itself right into the scenery. Once you know where it is you can’t miss it.
That was the successful flight.

We added fuel, dumped some cargo to take off from the field and made the unsuccessful attempt to reach Anta, Peru. We'd spotted it, was executing a tear drop to return, and hit the mountain.

PS I've loaded up Plan G in FS9 and FSX, but haven't had time to do much with it.
Thanks for the head's up on that program.
It'll work a lot better from planning purposes than the methods I'm using at present.

-12 merit points total tonight :)

We keep getting shot down by a UFO's...it's uncanny!

I'm learning a lot here at least. It's different country than Alaska!
I should know that from soaring days that once we locate the field we need to descend in a circle.....no procedure truns in the Andes.
The ridge lift off of these mountains here is awesome at times.
The thermals caused by snow patches can sudenly elevate the Gooney 500' at a 2000'/min rate..... as can suck you down just as fast on the lee side of the hill.

If you learn from your mistakes I should have a Doctor's degree in how to survive crashes

Perhaps I'll just go back to crop dusting...........
