DirectX 9, 10 or 11??

WarHorse47

SOH-CM-2024
This question is aimed at those of you that have installs of both FS9 and FSX.

I've been reading about the newest versions of DirectX, and am a little confused as to the newer versions.

If and when I get a new system (running Windows 8), should I stay with FS9 or install one of the newer versions? OR, can you have multiple versions of DirectX installed, say Version 9 for FS9 and Version 11 for FSX?

Can some of you guys share your experience and advice. Thanks in advance.

Cheers and Happy New Year.

As far as I know, the higher versions are backward compatible. Every sofware title I've seen that required DX listed the requirement with "or higher" at the end.

I installed Rise of Flight awhile back. Even though it flashed it all in my face, I didn't realize I was watching it install DX11. Everything ran as normal, FS9, FSX, the works.

I had no idea until I was reinstalling, retweaking FSX, and checked my version of DX, thinking about upgrading to DX10.....that I found it was already updated beyond.

...."Duh...."

FSX seems to be running a bit better...maybe. Could be a placebo effect.

DirectX can do that.

To me.

As I remember it, FSX is coded to take advantage of DX10. If so, a few extra frames would not be out of place with the jump from 9 to 11.

DirectX versions can't be picked at will.

If you run the installer on Windows XP, it will only install all DirectX modules up to version 9; if you run it on Windows 7, it will install all versions up to DX11.1; DirectX 12 is Windows 8 exclusive.

Choosing what version of DX will be used is up to the application. Some leave you the choice (like FSX), others simply use what thy were coded for.
