Display Settings Drop-out in FSX-SE

Lately when I start a flight in FSX-SE and my plane appears on the runway I have to reset all my display settings: aircraft detail, aircraft shadows, scenery density, clouds, etc. etc. Starting up the sim is already a slow process on my older PC, is there a way to correct this so my settings stay the same from one flight session to another?

Hi, I can't understand why this would be happening as normally, once you change the display settings, FSX retains the new values . All of these parameters are held in the FSX.cfg file and it sounds like your FSX is creating a new FSX.cfg each time you start up.

Here is a link to what seems like a similar issue discussed on a Steam community forum which might be of some help:

Have you ever done the verify game files?

To verify your game files please do the following:

1. Load the Steam platform and log into your account
2. Click the Library tab in the menu at the top of the screen
3. Click the List View from the view options on the top right of the screen
4. Right click on Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition to bring up a popup menu
5. Click on Properties from the popup menu to bring up another popup box
6. Click on Local files from the popup box menu
7. Click on Verify integrity of game cache from the Local file options
8. Wait for the progress bar to finish verifying your files. Additional files may download
9. Restart Steam
10. Restart Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

or

1. Log on to Steam
2. Select "View Games Library" from the "Games" menu
3. Right-click the Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition icon and select "Properties"
4. Select the "Local Files" tab and click on "Verify Integrity of Games Cache"

Earlier this year I installed a new Gigabyte graphics card and the NVIDIA App was bundled with it. It detects and interfaces with your games/sims and in the case of FSX-SE all the display settings can be adjusted with the app without booting the sim. Not sure if I want to uninstall the NVIDIA App or keep it... I used it to reset my display settings and right now I've been able to successfully exit FSX-SE and then restart and all my settings are intact. Thank you Scianoir and MrZippy for your suggestions, I think I've got a handle on the problem now. :encouragement:

Epilogue to my settings drop-out issue: The NVIDIA App was causing it, so I uninstalled the app. It's a really nice app for simmers and gamers, it just has far more features than what I need. Be advised, if your graphics card uses NVIDIA drivers any driver update package you download will probably have the app bundled as an install option. Also, if you choose to install the app you will need to kick up your FSX-SE settings with the app to be equivalent with your manual settings in the sim or the sim will drop back to default settings every time you end your flying session.

Thanks for providing feedback - may help others in the future with similar issues.

Even after 20 years or so flying FSX, it never ceases to amaze me the way things can interract with each other! It seems a good reason to try to follow a philosophy of keeping things as simple as possible once you have a nicely functioning system!

Sometimes you can resolve a problem, sometimes not. :(
A few months ago ModelConverterX stopped working on my Windows 10 PC which is where my FSX-SE, FS2004, and CFS2 are installed. Got some tech support from Arno at FSDeveloper but never got MCX working in any recent version. I suspect my new graphics card may have caused that but I'm not going to worry about it since MCX works OK on my Windows 7 laptop. No sense in making more aggravation for myself. :D
