Do you feel safe?

Never had anti-virus, never felt unsafe, never had a problem and I've been computing since the early 80's and on the internet since the start. It's the biggest con since they said smoking was good for you.

If I did use one then no, it would not put me off in the least that the designer/developer of one of them was an ex-member of the KGB as the 1980's was a very long time ago and I am no longer fearful of them Ruskies!

Years ago I picked up one that starting spamming everyone in my email address book. It was rather embarrassing. My priest called and begged me to disconnect from the internet. He said he had received 400 emails from me. I have use protection ever since.
 
I've been running Kaspersky on all my systems for years....swear by it! I'm not concerned about whether ex-KGB personnel are running the company ...I'm sure there's folks in Langley who could take a sneaky peek at my computer usage/files if they so wished too. :)

If that were a true statement then you would not be able to get quality free anti virus programs like AVAST and AVG.

Not having any protection at all is really bad idea if you are in a high risk group. Its still unsafe the way you are doing it but good internet habits might keep you safe for awhile. Some time or another you are going to find out it is a bad idea or you are going to regret that you had absolutely no protection.

Its a good quality freeware mesh for Switzerland for FS9 and FSX. Well six months ago the site was hijacked and a Trojan put in its place. If you tried to go to it at that time you might have found your self infected and never knew it. An infection like that would be invisible to you. You would think you are ok but running in the background would be a program stealing user names, password, credit card numbers and website information.

Luckily today we still have the freedom to do what we want so if you want to surf the internet with your pants down have at it. For me just a little bit of protection is needed. In the last two years I have gone to a few innocuous sites that have had infections that AVAST has protected me from.

I'd rather prefer to have ex-KGB on my side...
But there are 2 things I would never do:
1. Download something that wants to do "a free scan of your computer to check for viruses".
We had a junk computer once, and it was fun to see how many trojans, viruses and general malware these dropped on the machine. Afterward, you'd just reformat the drive and do it again.
2. Pay money for anti-virus software (that should be included in your operating system, and now is). Even if they start with the best intent, the business model is doomed by its own success, and the temptation always will be there for someone to put something out there to keep the company going.
 
10, 12 years ago, I'd run all the time without a/v and no problems. Not these days. I got hit several months ago when I was temporarily without while I was changing a/v programs. In the approximately 30 mins that I was without, I was hit hard and ended up having to wipe my HD to fix it.
 
To answer your question: Yes I feel safe. I even can't find my own files on my PC, therefore I can't believe there is single person who even wants to search for information on my PC....

Dangerous stuff.!!.One thing for pencil neck Geeks to Play..another for a foreign government to do the same with deadly intention. .To day China has the fastest computers in the world..Cyber warfare is not a Star trek Si Fi concept no more..we can get on with our own little Cyber world being upset,,but a Nation? reduced to a virus attack , disabling or controlling,everything???.. Whats seems secure today,is already outdated,Welcome to this Brave New world!!...ask Mr. Bone how Air traffic control can be sent into a tail spin!!..or the national power grid gets shut down!..Or the Red Phone on the Pres. desk is out of order!!.simplistic concern??? I do not think so!!....SCARY!!
