Here's an interesting way to limit the amount of stuff that ends up in the landfills. http://www.freecycle.org/ Freecycle.org is made up of 4,727 groups with 6,635,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. If you're about to pitch something that someone else could possibly use you just post it on your local groups webpage. I've seen stuff on my local webpage such as propane grills, tools, clothes, bicycles, etc...all free for the taking.

i've been doing it for over a year. i have gotten some pretty nice stuff that way.
dining room chairs, a nice desk, dog crate, software, books, a karaoke machine are some of it.

i have gifted out computers, parts, toys, clothes, software, games, books, fishing tackle, a bike, and lots of other stuff. it's pretty cool, but there are alot of people who treat it like a resource to get free stuff they can re-sell.
after you have been on the list a while, you learn to spot them pretty quick.
 
...and sometimes some rather interesting items appear on the list. Like this one from today. :monkies:

6 pairs of men's underwear. They are size medium (32-34). There are some that are regular boxers and others are boxer briefs. No stains! Clean and with good use left. I don't know why they hit the reject pile; 18 year olds don't give details!
