Like Tom says...

Perhaps the most entertaining are the sorts of glass cockpit that Anthony's DH.82A provides.

The other day I got to fly in this simulator:

I have to say I prefer analog as appose to this format.

Now I love GPS and all that good stuff, but I did not enjoy reading my direction/altitude/speed off the glass.

If I'm going to be reading those in number form, it has to be a HUD.

I found myself missing the normal VSI, fuel gauges

Alright, just admit it guys... you'll don't know how to read/use the GPS' or the full functions of the Glass cockpit. So, it stands to reason that the analog gauges are "better" to you; there is no shame in admitting that. Frankly, I had to go to flight school and learn (in courses) how to use them so, it makes perfect sense that it wouldn't come easy to many of you who haven't done either of those things.

So, you'll should stick to steam/analog gauges; that's right for you...

As for me and my house... we will fly glass. :salute:

Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

Thank you very much.

If you’re referring to my post, you’ve got it all wrong. I know how to read and use GPS and the full functions of the glass cockpits. I simply don’t enjoy using them. What do you fly again?

I'll admit I can't even read analog correctly, but hey, it does not matter, it's just flightsim

. And you're right I don't feel ashamed at all lol.

Your an honest man, Mr. Pekka "bushpilot!" :salute: If I can do anything to help, please feel free to ask; I've decided to become a flight instructor (CFII) and need the practise, so you'll be helping me too.
You enjoy flight simming. :wavey:

Well I'm not so honest, and exaggerated a bit, since I can read them decently enough. I was just trying to make a point

Mr. Pekka "bushpilot,"
OK; what's the difference between Absolute, Barometeric, True, Density, and Radar altitudes? Can you tell ALL of those in one glance looking at analog gauges (even in FS)? Huh??? ...And, there's my point.

Glass Cockpits Rule! :wiggle:

Wow, at one glance! I'm really impressed. Even after 13000+ RW hrs I can't do that I have to admit....

Tell me Brent "sg38", ...Was that 13000+ RW hrs as a Capt. in a levelD 767 or in a real one?

I just want to be clear on how to answer your query; FS vs. Reality?

Ya know what RW means, do you
BTW, where did I say 13000+ 767 hrs???

Back on track; Point is that e.g. even on the real CRJ the PFD is already very small and crowded with information. IRL it would be sometimes nice to have LESS information on the screen.
Furthermore is e.g. a 'classic' airspeed gauge way superior in depicting changes. The trend vector is partially an attempt to simulate a pointer movement.
Flying with a speedtape (especially without a separate digital speed readout in the center) is no fun at all in turbulence.
IRL and in the sim I prefer steam gauges

I like analog gauges, not because I can't learn/understand glass ones, but because I simply prefer the look of the analog stuff, where glass, to me, just represents the latest trend of soulless Airbuses, Bizjets and, dare I say it, fighter jets. I'd much rather be staring at the cockpit of a B707 or a Hawker Hunter than I would an A320 or F-35. Too clean and clinical. Like sitting in a hospital. Blegh...

Please tell us (both the FAA and me) what it means?

View attachment 9656 we just can't seem to find out what it means... Please enlighten?

Don't even start James.

Remember when you were boasting about flying CRJ's/Gulfstreams, whatever it was, and we pulled your FAA records? Single Engine Land?

Just stop right here James before you embarrass yourself

There's also the issue of framerates, why I usually stick to analog gauges. Glass pits tend to hit frames harder in FS. I've noticed that 3D analog gauges are those that give me the best faremerates.

Yeah, I remember when I got RealAir's Scout for FS9, it was the first plane I bought from them but they had sort of pioneered the 3D guage back then and it was really quite somthing. The gauges had a real fluidity to them, the same type of fluidity I remember from flying real aircraft. For the glass birds, I have to agree with the others, Bill's G1000 planes do have a great combo of legibility, functionality, and are quite framerate friendly.

Cheers
TJ

What I like about steam gauges, is you see a trend in acceleration.

You can see your altitude milking it's way up, or creeping slowly away from 10,000

On glass displays, you have to actually read off the number, as appose to just seeing if the altimeter needle isn't centered at 10,000

That's a really good point. I hadn't thought about it that way before. Some glass displays and quite a few HUDs have trend indexers, at least for airspeed, but even then you have to look in two places to see something that a single needle can probably show you in less time.

I guess that fits too with what Richard Graham said in each of his books on flying the SR-71. During takeoff Habus didn't have time to read the numbers that the engine parameter needles were pointing to. They just memorized the angles that those needles should display for a given situation.
