recognize what might be causing this weird shadow that just started appearing in the desert near Edwards? AFB? And it moves with the aircraft.

Hi there,
looks like a replacement texture for "grass" that doesn't fit well, which actually is a semi-transparent texture that gets layered over all nearby terrain. Look for an addon that replaced detail1.bmp in \Scenery\World\Texture.
A quick cross-check is to deactivate the "Land Detail Texture" checkbox in the FSX Settings > Display > Scenery menu because that turns detail1.bmp on/off.
