Dog1's Espiritu Santo Scenery Is Ready to DL

Jagdflieger

Jr. Admin
Dog1's Espiritu Santo scenery is up and ready to download.

Espiritu Santo is one of the larger Islands in the New Hebrides (now called Vanuautu) south of the Solomon Islands and was a major staging and logistics site for US and New Zealand forces operating in the South Pacific.

On the south side of the Island is the main port and town of Luganville and on the north side of the Island is "Big Bay." Big Bay is a very large protected anchorage used by the US Navy in WWII to secure much of its logistical and ship repair efforts. There's a lot of history here and most of the famous fighting and bombing units of the US Navy and USMC that fought in the Solomons staged from Espiritu Santo to Guadalcanal. It is approximately a 650 mile flight on a northwest heading to Guadalcanal from the airfield at Luganville and when fighter squadrons made the hop, they usually had an army C-47 fly with them to navigate over the open ocean between the island chains. When I was there on an assignment in the early 90s, I was told that the shoals and reefs between the two island groups had lots of aeroplane wrecks on then during the war, but tides and storms swept them away within only a few years after the war. The airfield at Luganville is still operational and has a few commercial flights daily, mostly from Efate, the capitol of Vanuatu.

If you are a scuba diver or snorkeler, this is one great place to visit. If your are a flight simmer, Dog1 just made it alot better too.

...............:ernae:.EXCELLENT work DOG1:ernae:
.....................great attention to detail:applause:

..........(all we need now is a sunken USS PRESIDENT COOLIDGE in the Segond Channel to feel totally at home:d)

....(anyone ever tried to display sunken objects ai ????)

The Calvin Coolidge hit a mine on the way into harbor at Luganville. It was full of troops and cargo and while all the cargo went down with her, I think that all the troops and sailors made it to shore OK.

She's on her side with the bow is near the surface and the stern is a couple of hundred feet down due to the incline of the reef where it went down. There are still weapons scattered about. I don't know if you can see it from the air. I flew over it once, but the water was choppy and I couldn't see anything.

.........yeah its hard to make her out today from the air JAG but in 42 according to pby crews it was damn obvious, seeing she was in such a shallow grave:d

.ive dived her twice with ALAN POWER's DIVE (once 4days in 96 and 6 days in 2003)
and if any divers out there would like a shore dive experience akin to diving on the TITANIC save up your pennies at get to one of the nicest WW2 (non grave site) dives on the planet
(including the best CORAL GARDEN decompression site ever:applause:)

plus want to see thousands of coke bottles(heaps intact) plus bulldozers and wildcats and heaps more just mozy up to MILLION DOLLAR point(see why it got its name, youll never want to leave):d
and all the beauty and people of the "volcano islands"
.............damn i better start savin up agin:d

Hello Jagd/Dog1

I have my CFS2 loaded with all the needed download as described in DOG1's READ ME document
Now is the next step to instal Dog1's new scenery in CFS2 with the included(GSL tools (GSL Edit and GOB check) + Espiritu Santo. lay).

(First I have made a back up of the complete CFS2 and too of the GSL file).
I have received

This document is very comprehensive. I am not familiair with GSL scenery.:redf:
I hope that you have the time to show me step by step how to install the new scenery!

By the way I pressume that a step by step guide will be profitable for other members too,
in view of the hughe landmark set by Dog1 improvement -and the improvements to come! - of the default scenery!

I'm getting an 'Error Opening This Document' warning with the read me PDF. Is anyone else having this happen? I have Adobe Acrobat installed and have had no problems in the Tulagi PDF.

Alright, Egypt, you're making me want to dive! Closest I've been to there is Tahiti, but check this out - an F4U-1A off of Oahu in 2005. She's in about 100 FSW. I also have 4 sake bottles my Dad pulled off of a Maru in Kwajelein in about '69. Those guys had some stones - They'd dive on these Marus at 130 - 150 feet "until they started to get tunnel vision, you know" then I guess they figured it was about time to surface. What's a dive table? Computer? Huh? Full wreck penetration, no training, no equipment, fishing around in the silt with their hands to find these bottles - or a femur - or a skull - who knows? They get totally silted out, zero vis, and feel their way out of the compartment. What's a safe ascent? Safety stop what? Decompression? What's that? No wonder about 4 guys died when he was there. Who knows how many bent. Makes me wonder how any of them survived... I remember as a kid seeing these typewritten pages he had kept with handrawn sillhouettes of some of the wrecks giving a name, depths to the deck, the bottom, etc - they were deep - and it would usually say something like "no torches - unexploded ordnance on bridge and fantail" It was all very facinating to a 9 year old kid. Wish I still had those papers. But I do have the sake bottles!

....excuse please for hi-jackin thread i'll shut up now:D

:isadizzy:
So far I have not seen a "step by step guide how to instal the new GSL scenery". Moreover is the GSL read me file included in the package Espiritu Santo Scenery by Dog1 is only a hyperlink (that won't open).
See my messages above.

Hopefully is somebody willing to explain here to me (and to fellow members!) which steps must be taken to install the very beautiful scenery (and the sceneries to come)!

I did it my first install using gobs. The Espiritu santo scenery is working and looking good. Langereis let me know if you still need help , if I can do it anyone can do it. :wavey:

Hey, thanks egypt. My H.D. is just about full:banghead:, so I'm gonna' have to do some serious pruning pretty soon.

Where is the GSL tutorial? I can't get the link to work either. I can't get the Layout imported with GSLEdit, so I must be doing something wrong.
