Download Speed

Shalom and greetings SOH tech support,

Not sure if SOH is still in WIP and renovation stage or not but would like to let you know about the download speed from SOH library in case you are not aware of.

Before the new forums, the download speed from SOH library is amazing 1 OR 2 MB per second. After the new forums, the download speed in case you are not aware is now reduced to 200 kbs per second.

Just letting you know

Regards,

Aharon

Just tested myself, got an average download speed of 4Mbps. That is better than the old site. In fact it is two to four times the speed I got on the old site. And I'm on a fiber connection.

Strange Before the new forums, I had been averaging speed of 2 Mbps for downloads but during the new forums, it is 250kb per second.

And I am on optic fiber internet service with speed of 300 Mbps.

We have no throttling going on at this time. Which will eventually be a problem. The old Library software had the throttling built in and seemingly worked well. There isn't an addon for this software that does throttling. When I end up having to do it we may we'll have to throttle the whole site. That's not the preferred way to do it in my mind.

Sorry to offend you but I do not understand throttling feature on the forums and I am sure you are not talking about throttle panels in aircrafts :) :) :)

Any of you can test the download speed using this specific download package from SOH library as seen on this link below and see what speed you get out of this download? This is what I did and got only 250kb per second instead of 2 MBPS for this download.

Thanks for testing Strange!!!!!

6 Seconds over here. maybe try resetting your modem: take the power cord out of it. Count to five, but it back in again and wait for the lights to come on again, then try again.

Priller,

There is nothing wrong with my modem averaging 350 MBPS which is beyond 300 MBPS speed that I am paying for. Other websites are doing fine in download speed. Avism gives me an average of whopping 6 MBPS per second.

I think it is because according to the home page of SOH, the renovations are still in progress and we should expect strange malfunctions or problems during renovations on SOH website and forums.

Download speeds should only be affected by the total numbers of downloads happening at any single moment. We have a gig connection that would be shared by everyone connecting to the server. As a general rule your speed should vary depending on traffic to the server at that given time.

Your speeds tell me that there is something between our server and you that is slowing us down. We had that issue with Comcast years ago where they were throttling traffic from us because they viewed we were hogging too much data on their network. . That isn't something either of us can control.

For the future I am looking into hosting the files themselves on a separate server so we don't have to throttle the file system or whole website. This is an additional cost over what we just setup. I am investigating that cost now.

That might explain the reason for the download speed.

I did not know that That explains why.

Ahhhh I see that is interesting possibility

I am surprised that you want a separate because the old and new SOH websites are doing very well. The new SOH forums are fantastic

Thanks for very interesting explanations

The old server had an ace up it's sleeve. The library software would control the number of files, volume of files and speed at which you can download. Prior to us getting that dialed in we had significant trouble everytime a popular download hit the server. There were times where you couldn't access the server because it was just too busy with downloads. We used rather draconian download speeds for everyone to ensure the site was accessible at all times. Most of the time those download speed restrictions were unnecessary. They were there as a safe guard against surprise excessive volume.

Not that I know anything, but do you have a detection package that scans downloads? Some anti-virus programs can kill those. Check, your virus program for site exceptions maybe?

That is good theory but it then had and still has not affected any download from old SOH website averaging 2 MBPS speed for download or other flight sim websites' libraries averaging 4 to 6 MBPS download speed. But that is good theory you have.

I think it is probably one time glitch as the SOH administrator did say that the download speed could be affected by too many people using SOH website to do downloading.any file especially the new model base DC-10 VDAT package that just came out 3 days ago.
