I was stationed at Castle, so I saw the MITO on the B-52's. One B-52 came in on emergency, and stopped 3/4 of the way down the runway. Crew bailed and ran... then the bomber blew up!
All that was left was the nose, wings, and tail. Reminded my of the fuel crisis in the movie "A Gathering of Eagles". Took a week before the runway was cleared, due to the investigation process.
There was a fire in the front wheel well, due to a hydraulic leak. Hot brakes ignited the hydraulic fluid. In a matter of few minutes, it blew.
