Denny, I used the 7D/100-400 L for the flight shots, and the Tamron 10-24 and Canon 17-40L for the ground shots. I linked to my flickr page, but I linked the re-sized 1024 pixel versions. flickr have changed a few things recently, but you should hopefully be able to see it still...

Ryan, that is a stunning shot, really nice indeed :)

The prop blur was really tricky, but I went in knowing I was going to have a fairly high miss rate. I reckon 80% of my shots would be useable, about 10% were well above average and slightly less than that were properly good ones.

ISO speeds varied. For the prop blur, I went down to 160 or 200 and upped the aperture to anywhere from f10 to f16. I had to change frequently depending not only on the variety of prop speeds of different aircraft, but also what they were doing at any given time. I have a lot of room for improvement, but that's why I love the hobby!

The 17-40 L can be utterly stunning. Some of the 100% crops are ridiculous!


Oh, and one other thing, as they said in Korea, if it smokes, it's friendly!

Great photo's guys,,thanks for all the info...i'd sent bud an email yesterday and was wondering why he hadnt answered me..hes usually pretty prompt...lol...now i see why....LOL...i was reading the latest issue of the "Mustangs magazine",and they have a great photo of him and three others (whos names escape me right at the moment),but Bud looks every bit his 22 years old that the author states his age to be...he had a real babyface in the two pics in the story...im sure bomber12 can back me up on this..he really looks young..

BTW..id didnt raz him..just said he looked "good" and "sprite"...lol

Compared to July's Flying Legends show, this was just a warm-up. But I've fallen in love with the shows put on by Duxford, they have a really special feel to them :)

O for Owesome shots alright .. the Lysander dose look if he should be flapping his wings :icon_lol: be so cool to see one , the old P-40B :cool: ... but that Thunderbolt , that really looks one amazing machine :icon_eek:

The Lizzie has a great stance, her wings look almost insect-like. I was very impressed at how quickly she turned!

And Snafu/War Eagle, she's a stunner. I'd never seen a P-47 in real life, let alone a Razorback. She made her debut flight at flying legends last year, after a major restoration. Earlier in the year, I'd seen her in the corner of the restoration hanger, almost hidden from view. I knew from that moment that I was seeing something special :)

Ok, I have to ask. How do you get shots of moving objects so sharp? Do you run IS with lens? Monopod? They are just extraordinary.

The canon 100-400L has two IS modes. One he was possibly using is made for panning shots. It would only stabilize up and down shaking and allow the user to make left and right panning motions.

I started off with mode 2 (panning mode), but soon switched to mode 1 and just left it there all day. I figured I wouldn't always be shooting side to side, and I don't really like to wear switches out if it's not necessary!!
 
Those shots look exceptional, but to a non photographic type, is the stunning detail, clarity and sharpness of the images chiefly down to the high resolution of the camera body or the high quality optics?

Yes and no. A lot comes down to techniques like proper hand hold for steadiness (even with is) proper iso selection for adequate shutter speed and balancing that noise from higher iso. In short having high end equipment helps but it still depends on the photographer. Wonderfull photos and jealous of the prop blur. I have not been able to get flight shots with blur like that yet.

On DSLR's optics are the main reason why pics are clear and sharp. Resolution is helpful for cropping and resizing pics.

Also, the 7D has dual Digic IV chips, one for the AF system, and one for all the other stuff. It definitely helps when using servo mode on fast-moving objects.

The F-86 in particular, wasn't hanging around!

The guys that shot that video looked to have actually been standing at the side of the M11, which runs a short distance from the eastern end of the runway. No admissions after midday, so I guess the latecomers are forced to hit the perimeter fence locations. I was east of the Concorde hanger, on a lovely patch of grass next to the taxiway, that was probably worth half a million pounds that day looking at all the gear on show!!

Apparently this F-86 is the worlds last airworthy A-variant, it was a hell of a show, especially after she taxi'd back, applied the parking brakes and wound the engines up, maybe only 20 yards away!! Duxford's packed full of rare and beautiful unobtanium.
