DXTBmp in Windows 8

WarHorse47

SOH-CM-2024
Awhile back I was curious to know what utilities work or don't work in Windows 8 and I never really got a clear answer.

When I moved things over to my new computer, I brought along many of the utilities I used with FS9 such as DXTBmp.

The program does work... sort of. It opens and manipulates various texture files if I open it directly, navigate to the texture folder, and click on the texture I want to examine or modify.

However, unlike the way it functioned under Windows XP, I cannot get it to run under the windows "Open with.." selection using a right click of the mouse on a texture within Explorer. Even if I set it as my default program for *.DDS files, it will not work with the 'right click' approach.

I don't know if anyone still uses this or how it operates under Windows 7, so I'm looking for some experienced guidance (on this or any other utility) used for managing or manipulating FSX textures. If there is an alternative, I'm interested.

Wish we had a section under Tools and Tips for some information sharing on what utilities are recommended for FSX under the various OS as in time members migrate to newer OS like myself.

Thanks in advance, as always.

Don't have Win8 and probably won't. . .given that, under Win7, it does (or at least mine does) function out of Explorer with the right click method. I don't ever use it that way, but it does work fine.:salute:

Thanks Falcon and Holger.

The program is listed as 'Open with..', and I even set is as the default for the *.DDS files but the issue persists. Weird.

I have Windows 8.

DxtBmp is installed and working exactly as you would like it to.
I have Paint.net as the default for .dds flies and DxtBmp for .bmp files.

Thus, if I right click a .dds file and select Open, or double click on it, it opens in Paint.net.
If, instead, I scroll down to the Open with window, I am offered the choice of:-

Dxt1 Bitmap Manipulator
Paint.net
Choose default program...

If I right click on a .bmp file and select Open, it opens in DxtBmp, as it also does
if I double click on it.

How to do this is clearly explained in his link above and as Holger says, it is much
the same way as it has been through XP, Vista and 7.

PS
I doubt if it is connected but there can be problems with third party software which is installed into either
C:\program files or C:\program files (x86).
For this reason, I have created a new folder named C:\programs and I install all non-FSX third party software into it.
FSX is installed on a seperate drive altogether and its addon files on a third drive.

Okay, I got it working.

I downloaded the latest version and reinstalled it, and everything is working as expected.

I must have installed an earlier version that didn't like Windows 8.

Thanks for everyone's input.

As I mentioned earlier the program did work, but to open a specific file I had to use the menu. It was not functioning with the 'Open with..' ability within explorer, and that was possibly due to either a corrupt install or an older version of the program.

When I setup my new computer, I had a complete copy of all my FS9 folders on an external drive including the folder I dedicated to utilities such as DXTBmp. When I copied it over to the new box, it seemed to work but later I discovered the issue with the 'Open with..' command.

What I'm learning (the hard way) is that older programs do not necessarily function well in Win8. There are several I've had to remove or replace. The 'lesson learned' is that whenever possible I need to insure that the program has been tested in Win8. Naturally, its been trial and error with a lot of the utilities for FSX and FS9.

At the risk of....

At the risk of sounding simplistic... all you need to do to -provided you installed the DXT program and not just copy and pasted an installation from another computer - is
to go to File associations... and have all [... whatever texture file types ] associated with the DXT program... Personally I have all bmp, jpg, etc. associated with PSP X3... and
just the DDS files associated with Wright's program... (I installed a dds filter but PSP still refuses to open DDS files) ...
I usually open extended bmp files with Wright's program and send them to PSP... work on them, resend them after edit and save them as DDS or extended Bmp files for my use..
This even worked with earlier versions of DXTBMP in XP, Vista and now Windows 7 (don't plan to use 8 at all yet)
