Ear infection and why did not sod tell me!

Ok guys,

Not funny at all!

For the past 2 weeks I have lost hearing in one of my ears. For the first week I thought it was just the normal wax build up I sometimes get. So I brought my normal ear drops and started using them, you know the type a few drops the normal fizzle whilst you look like a plonker keeping your head on the wonk followed by a tissue next tot he ear to catch the crap afterwards.

However towards the end of the week I started to get a little pain and so naturally had to visit the doc's. So I have a massive wax build up mixed with a tasty infection. So heres the thing. WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME HOW PAINFUL THESE THINGS ARE!

I mean jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus, its like a constant mild pain intersparsed randomly with what can only be described as the pain of someone randonly stabbing me in the head with a long thin sword.

Suffice to say sleeping has been a nightmere, Ive come home early a couple times from work simply because I couldnt concentrate.

Well I know these things are quite common so why is there no clear warning of just how painful these things are!

I am all too familiar with the intense agony of ear infections. Growing up, I had 2 or 3 ear infects every summer...and still get one from time to time. Always my right ear. They are painful beyond description.

I was working at a metal stamping plant and got a really bad ear infection...the worst I had ever had. And to add to the sheer torment of the ear infection, I had to stuff those yellow foam ear plugs into ears....I nearly wet myself each time I had to put in the right one.

The ear infection got so bad that it was causing me to lose my balance....which is not a good thing when you are running a 500-ton 8-process transfer press! I mentioned to my supervisor that I was having problems due to an ear infection and that I needed to sign out and go get it checked. "That's not my problem," he told me. I looked at him, and said, "Maybe not....but what is your problem is that 35,000 of these parts need to be made by the end of the week. There are only 4 guys in the entire plant who know how to run this press. Me. JJ...who is on his honeymoon and won't be back for 2 weeks. Gary...who is off for at least 12 weeks with two broken legs (he fell out of his tree stand while deer hunting). Carl....he's on second shift." The supervisor asks me how that is his problem. And I told him, "Because I QUIT!"

I don't know if they got those 35,000 parts made...and I really didn't care. All I cared about was that the doc gave me some really high level antibiotics and some really good pain pills that made the walls look like they were melting and took the agony away.

How do you say ?

I recently experienced ear troubles, after I get back weekly to the swimming pool,
and suffered mainly with the left ear because I had to work with headphones. :isadizzy:
The doc prescribes me an antibiotic liquid, after he washed my left ear with a kind of prime.:isadizzy:
The important lesson I kept is to allways keep my ears dry and to prevent them from the cold.
He did not recommend earplugs for swimming, the best thing to do is to dry them asap.

And then listen to me : NEVER USE COTTON STICKS ! :ipepsi2:

Sorry to hear about the ear, they do hurt when the infection goes too long. But for wax take this from a medical professional who has had waxy ears all his life. My dad (a great Doctor) used to put hot cod liver oil in a bit of cotton and poke that in. Not so good. Later in life I learned that warm to hot water sucked up in one of those squeeze balls with a soft tip gently washed into the down-turned ear works great. May take many jets but it always works and no chemicals.

And as if to re-enforce this, once I went to the university campus clinic where the RN said I might have an ear infection but needed to clean it out to see better. I said just give me the squeeze ball and I'll do it. I watched anxiously as she came instead with a 100cc syringe with a medieval looking stainless tip the size of a pea. I was really nervous when the first jet, and I do mean jet, of cool water hit the old tympanic membrane. After hitting me a few times with that I said I was done and left. Well after a day of being violently sick, and two more feeling like I was on a ship at sea I went back and explained why cool water should never be used. I stick to my hot water.

Both ears? wow, I feel lucky now its only the one. I think the antibioctics are now kicking in as the pain has certainly took a step back to just about tolerable now. Only issue now is when it comes to sleeping and my ear doesnt like it when i stay laying on one side for too long apparently.

Both were so bad that the ear canals had swollen shut. It made drops useless. The lymph nodes behind my ears swelled up to the point of causing more pain. I was eating Vicodin ,Ibuprofen and Aspirin just to get up. Get up, take the vicodin, 2 hours later Ibuprofen and again 2 hours later Aspirin.
