This one is a little bit closer to home. My sister, who is a nun with the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, Canada, just got back from Petionville, Haiti, a couple of days ago. Petionville is just outside of the capital of Port-Au-Prince, and near ground zero for this one, far as we can tell so far. She goes there for months at at time every year. This year she came back home early(!) Usually she stays until March or April. She has many friends and co-workers there, and has been unable to contact any of them. Understandable since there is probably no power.
 
Seems like Haiti is always fighting through hardship- poverty, hurricanes, political upheaval and now this. Just awful! I pray for the poor souls.

Going to be throwing out some prayers tonight, for that way.
We support an orphanage and school in that area.
I really hope everyone there is okay, safe and sound.

I think there may be a very high casualty count on this one. Haiti has notoriously bad construction and very little emergency response infrastructure. They will get a lot of help from the Domincan Republic but it's not going to near enough.

I'm sure our navy will be all over this since it's so accessable.
 
I heard on the news this morning (from the weather guy of all people) that the fault line there in Haiti is a lateral fault ... two plates laying side by side, and not like the ones in California where one goes under the other.

He said that lateral faults are the worst kind of faults because they usually have miles and miles of interplate interference. Which he also said have been the root cause of all the after shocks. At 6:05 AM (wed jan 13th) they have already experienced 65 aftershocks! Thats expotentially more than if the quake had been on the west coast of the U.S.

They showed some before and after pictures of the Presidential Palace ... it wasn't pretty.

Natural disasters show no distinction between class.

I hope the friends I have there are safe.
 
It is always the poor who seem to suffer the most from disasters. Haiti is such a poor country. I pray for all of those families.

On another note, I have a Priest friend who runs an offerenage (sp) /school in Haiti. I hope he is ok.
 
Seeing this kinda brings it home that we may take the availability of our first-responders and emergency services for granted sometimes....that they'll always be there.

Imagine there being no 9-1-1 to call.....a sobering thought.

My wife's nephew is near there at this time doing some work. Haven't heard from him yet.

This will have to be a massive rescue/recovery operation given the utter devastation that was brought.

I believe I saw where the Carl Vinson is in route from Norfolk and is going replinish along the way . Is NAS Roosevelt Roads still open ? I went TDY there in 94 but other than a few P3's and other surveilence A/C I don't recall alot of assets being there .
