Why would you want to hex edit it? Just use the AirEd utility program and do it in English.

Look for category 505, (Engine CFS/FS2000 piston engine) and then look for engine power sound level. That is the number you want to fix.
If you can find the info, also look to see if the cylinder displacement, number of cylinders, max RPM settings, and compression ratio are accurate; all of this affect engine performance. You can also mess around with the "thrust_scalar" in the aircraft.cfg file, that will also dramatically affect the aircraft's performance, either making it much faster or much slower.

Rami is right about the aircraft.cfg file. I've noticed a lot of payware aircraft have adjusted power, prop thrust, and control scalar tweaks to fine tune performance. So I started using it to adjust performance and it works very well.
This is because CFS2 will use the data in the aircraft.cfg before it uses the air file. The air file data is skipped if it is in the aircraft.cfg file.
So
if you want to, you can bypass the air file altogether and enter the following into your aircraft.cfg file and then adjust it for the engine you are working on. Also don't forget the prop. It too makes a big difference on performance. A lot of power on an undersized or inefficient prop won't do you much good. Scalar adjustment works well here too.

Those numbers can be used to increase / decrease turn radius and drag, which also affects performance. However, let me caution you of one thing...when adjusting aircraft performance, use the thrust scalar for reducing over-performing aircraft, not the engine power scalar. If you bring the "engine power" scalar down below 1.0 on many aircraft, the engines will not start.

Yes, I am familiar with all those parameters & how they can be tweaked. The problem that I have is that on my PC AirEd doesn't seem to want to behave properly. The alteration window doesn't open most of the time & only for certain sections. I have tried re-downloading the utility but no change for the better. Oh yeah, the copy to & from clipboard & other left click functions are grayed out & don't want to function.

Rami, that is true. I've also found a couple of instances where the 1.0 scalar setting wasn't sufficient to let the engine start. Settings elsewhere must have been off, but going to 1.1 or 1.2 got them started without too much performance penalty. I didn't dig further to find the cause as I was just going for some pleasure flights to check layouts, etc.
Actually I haven't used reducing the engine power scalar if a plane is too hot. Besides the issue of starting, to me that indicates too many other problems in the air file parameters allowing normal power to make it a rocket ship. Like weight, drag, lift, sometimes even prop thrust, etc. Better to get those in line, so the performance envelop is right overall. Otherwise it might be slower but could still be a super-plane in other performance categories.

The horsepower parameter at 505 just give you the right power SOUND... You need to adjust all other parameters, like RPM and engine volume, to produce the right power. You need also to adjust other entries, from 506 to 512.
