A remarkable passing, the Great War was indeed the end of an era and changed much in our modern world, and laid the track that led to the Second World War in many ways. WWI had a huge impact on most European nations, and tho we as a nation were involved for some of it, for some, we stayed apart. When we got it, we did have a part, and as part of it, it affected the veterans greatly for it was truly a terrible war with brutal conditions, and a massive death count due to the innovations in small arms and the use of massive bombardment, while at sea a savage war of attrition was carried out in both the U Boat campaign, and the blockade of Germany that led to harsh results for them. The war in the eastern front was equally hard and has savage results for Russia and elsewhere. It was also a war of machines, both on the ground, on the sea and in the air, and the technology that was developed for that was by and large brute force on the naval side and very risky in the air...while tank development was in its infancy. Yes there are two vets still alive in the UK, there were four not too long ago. Time is an inexonerable editor of life. Thanks to all who gave their service. I had a cousin who served as a female ambulance driver like Buckles and saw much of what he must have seen, which was the sharp end of it all.
Goodby and our thanks.
